University of Delaware Early Action Class of 2030 Official Thread

makes sense, thank you!

Our son was accepted Nov 18 and had his merit (not need based) offer within a week. The first place he saw it was when the admitted student package showed up in our mailbox.

My OOS son was admitted w/11,000 a year. He had 4.3 weighted, no test scores, fantastic essay, and great extracurriculars! He took a handful of AP’s but nonetheless good grades!

Really waiting for UofSC CIC and Syracuse Newhouse right now!

My daughter got her acceptance the same day, for ChemE. We haven’t heard anything about merit yet, maybe this week….

She has an UW 4.0, full IB diploma, 1570 SAT, so I’m kind of assuming she will get some merit. UD is one of her top choices given their strong ChemE program! :crossed_fingers:t2:

We are also OOS (from mass)

I’d be surprised if the merit didn’t come this week for you. Unless they plan to invite your kid to the Distinguished Scholars weekend. That may come later. Not sure how they handle that, but those invites do come out later.

I think they are initially offered the highest merit outside of the scholarship weekend. When my daughter was admitted it seemed like those invited had 35/36 acts and the equivalent SAT’s, so I think this student has a solid chance.

I’d imagine she would get 17k which seems to be the highest regular merit this cycle; from there, could get additional based on top awards that are invite only. My daughter got 13k and her stats are significantly lower (at least SAT wise)…

Ok she just checked her portal and received 13k presidential scholarship.

Not gonna lie, I’m a little surprised. Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I expected she would receive the top scholarship.

For those watching stats: She’s gotten one A-, and otherwise As and A+s in everything. Her listed gpa is 4.1 out of 4.0 (school does not weight, so maybe that’s playing into this). Full IB diploma candidate with HL classes in IB AA math (equivalent and sometimes considered more rigorous than Calc BC), Biology and ESS with a 1570 SAT. NMSF, research project related to major, co captain of varsity equestrian team, community service, resident assistant and tour guide at her boarding school. OOS with ChemE major.

I’m surprised at that as well. It seems like everyone who got the top scholarship took a lot of APs. So I wonder if APs are weighted more highly than DE or IB or honors when they calculate merit. That’s the only thing I can think of. I don’t think the ECs come into play for merit, but would for honors college. Also not sure if they use the SAT score for merit. I wish schools were more transparent about how they decide.

Maybe that’s it, though everything I’ve ever heard is that IB is valued equally to AP.

My kiddo is speculating that ChemE majors might not get as high of merit because the school is so highly ranked for that major, so there is less of a need to incentivize people to pick UD. Who knows…:person_shrugging:

I imagine IB is valued equally to AP for admissions purposes, but maybe not in their merit formula?

Could be. Or maybe she’ll still get invited to distinguished scholars weekend. What the heck do I know? Everything about the process (at UD and just about everywhere else) is a mystery.

Did she report/submit any AP exam scores?

I don’t think her daughter took any AP exams because the school doesn’t offer APs. She did a full IB diploma, which is very rigorous, but @tillycat can correct me if I’m wrong.

Her school does not offer AP. Full IB diploma. Took French IB exam last year (because she was a year ahead in French) and scored a 6. NMSF from MA which required a 225 index score. 790/780 SAT. Im a little surprised. But it is what it is!

I do think they use test scores, back when my daughter applied merit seemed to be very ties to test scores (but when they went TO not as much). My 3.95 34 got $17,000, my 3.95 33 got $15,000, and my 3.7 30 got $5000 I think. OOS. 9, 7 and 4 AP’s.

I’m wondering if she will get an invite to the scholarship weekend, do you know her class rank?

Her school does not rank! No weighting and no ranking.

The counselor should send in at least a percentage. Our school doesn’t rank either, but a couple of my kids were close to teachers and found out, but their actual rank wasn’t sent to colleges (they were 8 and 10 of 300+ but I have no clue what was actually sent). My kids definitely needed merit to go oos, 1 applied to 20 schools.
