University of Delaware Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

Can you find the honors decision in the portal somewhere? or just in email?

Email and portal, I’m told.

Just email fir my d

Same for us. Would have been nice but merit is more important. Without merit, UDel drops off our list.

My DS and husband are on their way back home from yesterday’s admitted students day. They loved it. Said Chem and Honors program presentation were reeally good. And more importantly (to my son at least) he met some Marching Band students! UD was always a top choice but I woould be ahocked if he doesnt end up there now!

Same. At this point, we are just waiting for merit to come in before committing.

I came away from the visit thinking they were really well organized. But most of all it’s big enough to offer all the opportunities of a large research institution (research, clubs, internships etc), but small enough to build community. They also said new this year will be a college of engineering LLC so if not in honors college that’s another option. And the largest classes in CS were intro ones at around 60-70 max. Kid loved it, but I did as well. The honors presentation summed up the decision perfectly: does the school have what I need/want; and is it a good fit for me.

Going to head to Decision Day, but can’t decide until Merit is sent out. I wish they would send out $$$$ like every other college with their acceptance letters.

I know students waiting on merit from Clemson, Rutgers and Pitt, one of mine applied to 20 schools in 2021, merit chasing, so was accepted into all but had to wait on merit for many to make her decision. College admissions is different everywhere.

Of the acceptances our S24 has so far, only one of the 7 sent merit with the acceptance letter. Still waiting on 4 of them!

This is the first year it’s like this for UD. In past years students were notified about merit within a few weeks of acceptance. At decision day they implied merit was being held up because of FAFSA issues, but I’m not sure why that would be.

Maybe they’re changing on how they are assigning merit? When one of my daughters applied in 2019, merit appeared to be based heavily on test scores, I think they still helped a lot after COVID, but other things were considered as well, since students received merit even with TO. Maybe the fafsa delay is messing with calculations?

Yeah, I’m sure they have some internal system. I need to be patient… but that’s not me! :joy:

I’m also anxious bc it’s my son’s first choice. But he has several very solid merit offers from similar schools. I think just a year or two ago he’d have been a shoe-in for decent merit from UD. This year, I’m not at all sure.

We have the same wish! We went to Decision Day this past weekend. My kids in love and I knew he would be (second visit). He is reasonable enough to understand its a non starter without merit (he is into 9 other Engineering schools, most with merit or in state). We just cannot justify paying double for a comparable education just because its across state lines (what’s the sayin - sometimes love just ain’t enough). I wish you all the luck - its been an emotional few days.

Hoping this ship turns around in the next two weeks. In the mean time we are scheduling second and third visits to the others in top 3. I was simply not prepared for this part of the experience.

@MRRB_SE - I feel your anxious! When we decided to chase merit I did not realize that it might lead us here. @Mjkacmom - I thought someone said that FS said that merit was based on scored and 9-11 grades, but that is hearsay at this point.

The email says ā€œdeliver merit aid packages by mid-March, if not sooner". The website and portal says " informed about merit aid starting in mid-March.ā€ They continue to be unclear - that seems like any time between now and April.

That might have been me. My son emailed to ask if he could send mid-year grades for merit consideration and received this reply: ā€œMerit scholarships and the Honors college reviews the self reported academic record with your grades from 9th-11th, therefore, 12th grade courses will not be considered for that purpose.ā€

Bummer.

Its a bummer for us too. Hopefully my kid will pull through on rigor. His junior year could not have been harder and it reflected in his grades.

Same here!

Hard to make a decision when no one has the final figures.
It’s like buying a house and going to closing, without knowing what the house will cost.

It’s weird that UD merit is taking so long, from what I understand in the past it’s been pretty formulaic ie x test scores plus x gpa equals x$ per year. Not sure why this is one of only schools where Fafsa delay would have an impact.

Not many students send test scores any longer. They only have the grades to look at.

Yeah we didn’t either. But still they seem to have a formula for in state vs oos, gpa, etc. Guess it’s going to be more holistic this year. Assuming my d gets similar to previous years, we will be going to decision day 4/13.
