I never claimed that UCF was better than UF for academics. The difference between you gators and me is that I’m not delusional about how my future school is perceived by the rest of the country. This is the point we’re trying to make, to prove to you gators how ridiculous you sound when thumping your chests about attending UF.

Just so you know, Miami is my first choice, not UCF.

I think I mentioned this on a post in this thread somewhere… but… just in case I didn’t… I too work for a fortune 500 company (but I’m not a recruiter) that maintains a similar list with 25 universities and UF is also on that list. I keep getting asked to go on recruiting trips to Gainesville.

Well then rogracer & goufgators both your companies are destined to go belly up soon since UF is on your lists.
Both your companies obviously don’t know what they are doing.

Anyhow, unfortunately around here perception is reality. People make ludicrous statements and most members just go with it. Gotta get the facts straight.

Yeah, I see what your trying to do. Your trying to compensate for larger student body by trimming away weaker less qualified students to see how the best of UFs stacks up against the rest such as UVA, Harvard, JHU, UCF, etc…

Or to prove the the point that the final result from trimming away the weaklings that the SAT Math and Verbal scores are anything but “mediocre”.

When you are trying to compare schools, 25-75 percentile SAT median range group is probably the best factor you can use without having to eliminate or trim the student body class to fit a certain size you are looking for.

Just so you know, SAT/ACT 25-75 Percentile shows the range of the middle 50% percentile. In other words, its the SAT range from the top 25% to the top 75% of the student body class.

SAT/ACT 25-75 Percentile
University of Florida: 1100-1320 [1]
University of Virginia: 1220-1430 [2]
Harvard: 1390-1590 [2]

Like, Once you go to college, you’ll probably take a statistics class, you will know that the way to do things…do not to compensate by force trimming and multiplying the student body number by percentage and all that shizzle to get what you want or need.

Conbine that with the Mid-point of the 25/75 SAT percentile score

U Florda: 1250
UVA: 1325

WHAT THIS MEANS IS…

First 50% SAT percentile of UVA student bodies have higher SAT scores than the first 75% SAT percentile of UF students…

Continuing that, UVA’s 50/75 SAT percentile would be competitive if not just as strong as UF’s 75/100 SAT percentile score…UVA’s 75/100 SAT percentile scores would likely blow UF out of the water.

I wondered why UCF was brought into the discussion - especially with 7-8 year old data. Kind of off topic…but that diversion allows me to point out another important factoid:

Did you know that Harvard is the Ole Miss of the North? I just found that out. :)

If your trying to compare schools, you can’t really just shrink them numerically in a hypothetical situation to compare two universities SAT scores on the same level. It just doesn’t work like that.

Yes, all competitive colleges do that, but your doing something completely different.

xNYer didn’t try to make any new 25-75 percentile calculations based on the assumptions of removing the “weakest” test scores at UF. He simply said that 16% and 21% of 2007 students scores above 700 on the SAT for verbal and math respectively. He didn’t try to calculate the middle 50% but just said that the numbers would be impressive. I don’t think he’s got statistical issues. When you take your math classes you will learn that reading and understanding the math problem is more important than knowing how to solve it.

From UVA’s 2007 -2008 common data set:
SAT Verbal for enrolled students range 700-800 = 29%
2,742 x .29= 795 UVA incoming UG’s with impressive stats.

SAT Math for enrolled students range 700-800 = 37%
2,742 x .37= 1,014 UVA incoming UG’s with impressive stats.

Per UF’s 2007 - 2008 common data set:
SAT Verbal for enrolled students range 700-800 = 16%
6,441 x .16= 1,030 UF incoming UG’s with impressive stats.

SAT Math for enrolled students range 700-800 = 21%
6,441 x .21= 1,353 UF incoming UG’s with impressive stats.

Statistically UF has a greater number of high scoring SAT Verbal students 1030 > 795 than UVA.

Statistically UF has a greater number of high scoring SAT Math students 1,353 > 1,014 than UVA.

Sorry but those are just the facts.
UF still blowing out UVA.

Phead, he’s got a good point there. If you read and try to understand what he’s trying to point out it makes sense.

.29 of the UVA incoming class have verbal scores of 700 or higher. Likewise, .37 of the UVA incoming class have math scores of 700 or higher. Since we already know what the student body size of the UVA incoming class was, we can easily know how many of those students scored 700 or higher in each section of the SAT.

The same calculations are done with UF’s student body. He has correctly shown that there were more incoming students at UF with 700 or higher score for each section than UVA has for each section.

OOOHHH MY GOD LOOL. Your data totally supports my 25/75 SAT Percent.

UF has a greater number of high scoring SAT Math/Verbal students than UVA because UF is a bigger school or more people or greater student population.

If you kinda need to adjust for school size, UF is way bigger UVA, so of course UF wins out number wise of quality 700-800 SAT scoring enrollees. UF is twice as big as UVA.

UVA has a greater number of high scoring SAT Math/Verbal students than UF PERCENTAGE WISE, because if you care about sheer volume, of course UF has more, but relative to the size of its overall student body, these students are represented at 16%, 21%, versus 29%, 37% at UVA.

Omg. Like, I feel like I lost some brain cells just arguing that. You guys must be like…really delusional ppl.

Consider yourselves lucky that you don’t have to live in the same state as these UF students/grads. It really becomes unbearable to hear them, year round, bragging about their state school. Now you know why so many people can’t stand UF. Their arrogance and false self-importance knows no limits.

UF has set itself on a path to significantly reduce its incoming class sizes by more than 15%. This will no doubt increase the middle 50% numbers. The point that xNYer is making is that if UF reduced its student body size to the size of UVA’s then the SAT stats for both schools would be the same. Like I said, UF will start to reduce its class size starting next fall.
