I have a nephew currently in HC who lived in Meyers ( the Honors Dorm) as a freshman. The daughter of a close friend is in HC as a current freshman, but she elected BDM over Meyers.
Meyers is older, but itās a little larger than a lot of the newer or more recently renovated dorms. Itās generally only honors kids, and primarily freshman. Older HC can live there, along with roommates of HC. Itās very proximate to the Science Hill area, but itās a hike from Business School, Journalism and North Campus (which houses all the non-Stem humanities).
Most of the dorms that are on Baxter St (or near its intersection with Lumpkin) are considered more central. Much easier to walk from this to your English, History or foreign language classes. Also closer to the Miller Learning Center and Tate Student Center.
UGA does a pretty good job of explaining features in their housing page, and there are a decent number of YouTube tours offered by residents.
Many of the HC academic advising meetings will occur in Meyers, so proximity is a plus for that. But that isnāt a weekly (let alone daily) occurrence.
I believe all of Meyers is suite style (not hall style bathrooms).
Additionally, ESPNās College Game Day is usually on the Quad in front of Meyers. In recent years UGA has hosted at least one Saturday of this during the fall.
Remember that UGA has an extensive bus system, and lots of kids bike or use scooters. So the distance isnāt forbidding. But itās a hilly campus, and roughly 1.25 miles from the Arch (where campus and Downtown meet, and the northernmost section of North Campus) and Meyers.
Lots of good dorm options - so it tends to be about personal preferences.
Thank you for the detailed post! Do you happen to know if someone who is not in the honors college can still live in Meyers? Waiting on an honors college decision, but would be happy to live in a mostly honors college dorm even if not part of it.
My understanding is that the non-Honors student would need to be the roommate of an HC - who makes the selection first.
The other dorms right next to Meyers are also pretty quiet, and less Freshman focused. So that might be a good alternative if an HC roommate isnāt secured.
I donāt think Honors kids get any priority for choosing housing- that order is determined by when you pay your housing deposit. but yes, honors kids have the option of living in Meyers Hall- itās pretty nice and has a very nice grass quad outside it. My outgoing kid opted to live in Russell Hall- one of the freshmen high rises which are known to be extremely social. she wanted to be part of Greek life, and most of those kids opt for the high rises (this is not a rule). It has communal bathrooms (single gender) but they are clean. floors are co-ed but separated with boys down one hallway and girls down another.
I kind of like Meyers, personally, but it was her choice to make. I feel like the smaller dorms like Meyers would create a more tight knit community feel- with the Meyers community consisting of Honors kids. I do feel like she is not taking full advantage of everything Honors has to offer by living in the high rises, but thatās ok too. I think non-honors kids can live in Meyers but only if there is space after the honors kids have chosen it- so more of a guarantee if a non-honors kid has paired up with an honors kid for housing.
my daughter specifically did not want to live with only honors kids.
BDM is probably the most popular dorm choice right now since itās the newest- it was filled before my daughter got to choose. Russell and Brumby are similar to each other, both fairly recently renovated. Brumby is a tad newer but also a tad further up the hill. Creswell is the 3rd high rise, but itās the last resort for those kids who want those big social dorms because itās old and has not yet been renovated.
There is nothing wrong with the other dorms- each has its advantages, like private bathrooms or sinks in the rooms or grass quads or closer to whatever part of campus your classes might cluster in.
is this helpful at all?
Very helpful! Thank you so much. I always appreciate your posts!
Thank you for sharing! Fingers crossed!
Accepted after Dec deferral: 4.4w/3.8 uw/4.1 uga/31 (but 33 for math/english)
OOS Waitlisted. 4.1 GPA
OOS accepted after being deferred in December
Rank 5% of class
4.3 GPA
Loads of EC and leadership
Good luck to all !
OOS daughter accepted but no mention of honors or scholarships in letter of acceptance. Does it come separately? If she applied for honors will she be told that she did not get in?
Also saw nothing⦠but wasnāt really expecting anything.
If she applied to honors, there is a separate letter. You need to toggle the application type to honors.
When should we expect a uga id for housing? It seems it will arrive via e-mail?
S24 OOS denied. 3.98 GPA, 1370 SAT, 8 APs, 7 Honors.
David Graves mentioned in the comments on the blog. He said it takes a couple of days to roll out so hopefully Monday.
Does anyone know where to look for merit if itās being offered? Our daughter was admitted EA in Dec and we were hoping for merit today, but no sign of anything anywhere. If thatās the case, itās fine but odd that they invited her as a finalist for CURO Research scholarship, yet no merit (?)
I agree I would expect merit with that Curo. I know they arenāt done with scholarships. are you sure you have checked her status page? I honestly canāt remember where or when we heard the merit info last yearā¦
Itās strange. When she clicks on her admission decision from 12/15, itās updated to show her invitation to the Honors College which obviously is new since that invite came in early March, but no mention of merit. The prior letters for CURO and Honors which are separate are still on the portal so the way we read it, thereās no merit offer today which is a bummer. $3K for CURO is great, but certainly not a deal-breaker over other schools.
Mine came early in the morning (3am) on the Saturday after I got in for EA
