University of Georgia Class of 2028 Official RD Thread

What do you like better about the UF campus? I’m interested in both schools, and it’s a tough decision.

Have you visited UGA also? Would you be willing to share your pros and cons of both schools?

I’ve never been to UGA. UF just felt right when I was there. Everyone was kind and welcoming and the campus was clean and beautiful. Nothing in particiular, it just felt right when I got there. Sorry, this is probably not that helpful. I think you just have to visit to see which one feels right for you. You will know right away once you get there if you want to spend 4 years there or not.

my daughter and I did the UF tour and then a UGA visit in one trip last year- now she is at UGA. I know that getting into honors at UGA was a factor, but I actually think she would have chosen it anyway. Both are nice but she just preferred the vibe at UGA- met so many happy, fun, nice people (just like the poster above said about UF!). there is so much luck, I guess, in who is on your tour and who you will meet. her sister (who is a college senior somewhere else) just visited her at UGA for a weekend and fell in love with it, too. She loved that they could walk into Athens to go out and hit the bars (and she felt very safe). She loved Milledge Ave where the rows of Greek houses are, and loved the people she met. she has never been to UF, so she can’t compare it to that, but she has been to U of Michigan a couple times and never got the same vibe as she felt at UGA.

As an in state person for Florida I think it’s a great school, but UGA is a nicer place and Athens is a much nicer college town. If I fought off the fact that we’ve been raised in UF culture I’d say UGA is more attractive all around. Gainesville is kind of dingy once you step off of campus. UF’s campus however is nicely laid out and easier to get around. The dorms and Greek life are great and very much a part of campus. It is BIG but not as spread out as UGA. I like UF’s sporting venues better than UGA’s, but the student culture at UGA is better and more friendly and inviting. UF tends to be more cold and hyper competitive. UGA has a more southern charm feel to it where as UF has a more northern feel to it and a very competitive academic environment (which is great in its own way). You can feel the culture differences on both campuses and among the students. The “Vibe” is very different. UGA kids look like they are happy and having fun, UF kids look stressed out lol

It really depends on your preference, but the two campus and alumni cultures are very different.

My daughter absolutely hated the Big 10

I have heard that UF can be really cutthroat and competitive, and that isn’t what I’m looking for at all. I don’t really care about rankings and would much rather spend four years in a happier place where I can be successful in/out of the classroom, especially with the bonus of being in what sounds like a great college town. I’m excited to visit!

I’ve heard some programs have a way more competitive feeling than others. Which major are you looking at?

Business, I think. I have read the clubs can be really difficult to get into because of the size and competitiveness. Have you heard anything about that at UF? I really haven’t heard that about Terry or UGA as a whole.

I heard for UF, stem is competitive while humanities is not, and everything else lands in the middle. So business is probably a mixture. I have not heard about clubs being competitive though. I was under the impression you could generally join whatever clubs you wanted. Don’t really know much about the atmosphere at UGA though.

I don’t think any one would describe the atmosphere at UGA as competitive.

in general my daughter there feels like it is chill and nice. she fell in love when she visited and a sophomore from her high school took her out- it felt non-judgey and like she could wear whatever she wanted. when she visited UF and was taken out by a sophomore from her high school, it felt different, higher pressure, they were telling her what she had to wear. this is all very anecdotal and might be just due to the difference between these 2 acquaintances who showed her around.

even the notorious Southern sorority rush, although very frantic, did not feel toxic to her at UGA- the vibe she got from UT Austin was much more competitive in that regard, like you had to live in the right dorm and get to know the right people to get into the right sorority- and if you didn’t get in to that one, it would be devastating. that vibe put her off to UT. again, anecdotal based on small numbers of aquaintances.

I can’t really speak to clubs per se. My daughter has been able to get involved in the things she wanted, but there was a process. she is not in Terry or business clubs.

Let’s keep the focus on UGA please. Admissions policies of other universities are off topic. Questions in the line of “Should I go to UGA or XYZ?” should go on its own thread.

Chances of getting into Terry College of Business?

I am an out of state student and was recently admitted to UGA as an intended business major. I am concerned with my chances of getting into the Terry College of Business after my freshman year.
Here’s my stats:

  • Coming in with a 3.8 UW high school GPA
  • Transferring in 38 credit hours from AP/dual enrollment courses
  • Got a 1240 SAT score and am aware that they place high importance on SAT score into the Terry BBA major application.
  • Want to pursue a marketing major

I want to know how selective the application process is, along with my chances of getting in with the low SAT score.

For those of you who have already been admitted to Terry for Fall ‘23 or Spring ‘24, what were your stats and/or courses you took that you would think helped you get admitted?

You should be fine. They let in most people who have a strong undergrad GPA and there is another test you can take if you would rather not apply with SAT. Good luck!

Does anyone know the difference between an Admitted Student Experience and a New Dawg Day? We are scheduled for the Admitted Student Experience but it seems to be just a tour with a Q and A session. She has not gotten an email with New Dawg Days info or dates. Thanks!

Acceptance varies by major. Not sure how much SAT play into marketing? It is valued higher in some majors like accounting and finance and MIS than it is others.

They don’t look at your undergrad GPA or your high school GPA. They will look at the grades you make in your prerequisite classes, so be sure those are strong. I would also study for and take the ETS to substitute for your SAT as other applicants will likely have higher ones. If you can place out of Pre-calculus by either getting an adequate score on AP Calc, or taking the math exam during orientation that would also be helpful. Accounting is a weed out, so be sure to pay for and study extensively the Skoolerz packets which are offered by an outside company to support accounting students and are very helpful.

As an out-of-state student, I would think you won’t have a problem.

DD was admitted RD (OOS) - I thought I had read that not all merit/scholarships have been announced yet and it may be a week or two after. Does anyone know when they will be released?

Per David Graves in the admissions blog, scholarships will continue to be released through early April. An email will be sent once that process is complete.
