didn’t the admit rate go down though? GPA still pretty high. so what are you disappointed in- lower SAT/ACT scores? maybe UGA just put less of an emphasis on that since that was the nation-wide trend. although the scores look the same to me.
I’m thinking maybe UGA is putting more emphasis on diversity and 1st generation students? But I’m not an expert on reading data.
Last year it was 35%, this year 37%, mainly due to 600 fewer applicants this year. But I am not disappointed at all- I am thrilled because my kid is on the bubble.
oh, I see. I though admit rate was higher last year. and there are more in-state applicants this year, I think. overall, prob about the same. I’m more interested in the quality and character of the students than stats- hopefully UGA gets that right again (and admits your kid!).
There’s a lot of good information in the blog. I’m fairly certain it said they accepted more kids this year than last. (Easily confirmed if anyone cares to dive into the blog.) That suggests they are expecting a lower yield than they predicted last year or they are increasing the target class size.
I’d love to see the inner workings of admissions at any school! It’s fascinating to me.
600 less apps than last year, but 600 more admits. So I think you’re likely correct- they must be expecting a lower yield.
Right, and I love the transparency of the UGA admissions office. Does a great job describing what the admissions team values (course rigor, kids taking the most advanced classes offered at their respective school, etc.)
Good luck to all the applicants today!
Yes, through our two admissions cycles, their admissions department seems to be the best, most organized, and most transparent of them all.
Def better than the whole UTK SRAR debacle
I have really liked how transparent UGA has been throughout this entire process. S24 was deferred in the EA round so we will see what happens at 4pm today. His stats are within their parameters but it is always a crapshoot. This was very much considered a high reach for him. Good luck to all.
Haha, if you want to rate other schools’ admissions departments, you could say, “On a scale of UTK to UGA…”
(d24 was another one affected by the infamous utk srar)
UTK’s admissions were unacceptable, but in their defense it was their first year dealing with crazy high application numbers. They had to go from non-selective to moderately selective very fast. I bet they will do better next year, but they should be taking notes from UGA!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but pretty sure the HC app was required for consideration for admission.
On the Honors College admissions, a prior poster is right that today’s announcement will only be for students who actively applied (with the essays). They take about 1/3 of the honors college class through an “auto admit” that is based on the EA app (it’s still holistic, but it’s heavily weighted toward stats, and they have the common app, UGA essay and LOR at this stage - just not the supplemental honors app essay). An additional 1/3 is accepted today (or a smidge earlier if finalists for Curo or FF).
The final 1/3 applies in fall of their freshman year and is accepted after those grades are in. (Essay will required).
So anyone who matriculates at UGA without HC, but desires HC, still has a shot. It delays the benefits (specialized advising, early registration, HC classes and eligibility for HC dorm), but they become available once selected.
Hope that helps!
Yep, UTK has dealt with a surge in applications that is staggering:
Fall 2022 - 35,564 applicants
Fall 2023 - 49,790
Fall 2024 - 59,151
But they really need to take a hard look at their process (and I say this as a proud parent of a current Vol). All I can say is that I’m glad my daughter was accepted in Fall 2022…don’t think there’s any way she’d get in now!
Maybe these SEC rivals can do some “best-practice” sharing.
it’s really interesting that no one is taking a hard look at why all these southern schools are seeing such a dramatic surge in popularity in the last several years. It’s not “football”. Football has always been there. If that was the case, these schools would have had these numbers 20 years ago.
Examples of why applications at Southern schools have increased so dramatically in the past few years…
- Joining the Common Application
- Less restrictive Covid protocols
- Weather
- Generous merit scholarships
- Lower OOS cost of attendance
And as that happens, kids talk and the schools become more popular options at their home schools and so it goes.
If anyone wants to discuss this, I suggest starting another thread. It could be interesting.
The UGA blog post from today says both merit and honors college will be released today. If I understand the comments on the blog post, the student will need to login to their portal. They won’t receive an email. (I mean for students already accepted EA looking for updates on HC and merit).
I agree completely. I found UGA fantastic to deal with last year with my OOS son…I loved their transparency.
You just brought up a point for me. In FL nobody could ever say that statement “The top 20% of my child’s school obv was accepted to UF or FSU”. That is not even remotely possible in FL. Even top 10% doesn’t get you easily accepted. Even TOP 20 student out of a 1000ish class doesn’t assure you of acceptance into UF/FSU in FL.
And so, our kids often are forced to look out of state. FSU/UF give away tuition to OOS applicants while rejecting strong in state applicants. It’s a major issue that from what I understand is being brought to legislation very soon. My point is….UGA is a very good school and I believe strong applicants find it attractive
