University of Maryland College Park (UMD) Early Action for Fall 2024

Im not the person you sought but here is BK info: Banneker/Key Scholars - University of Maryland Honors College

Think i read somewhere 20% are offerred Honors and 50% of class in ALL LLPs

Sure but the number of transfers allowed future years is only 100 (reduced from 1000) and that includes internal and external transfers. I wouldn’t rely on that as even an option in decision making

Exactly! This IT professional has a degree in English Literature. One of my direct reports has a PHD in Artificial Intelligence. There are a great many paths to a successful IT career.

Does anyone know if students participating in the Freshman Connection program have the opportunity to get an invite to a LLP for the spring semester?

Both are 2 different fields Math major you will develop great skills and but if you can master all the CS algorithms and crack the problems sure more than welcome

Math major you can achieve great things and number crunching etc.

UDel CS is great too lot of locals banks and companies hire in Delaware and Philly

Ultimately it all depends on the Kid and what he want to be.

I am in the software engineering field last 25 years hire various talented kids and college doesn’t matter as long as you solve interview tests.

UMD doesn’t like to post yield rates but in the end about 1K Honors students enroll each year. So obviously the number offered Honors is much higher than that.

It is a myth that only Honors get merit, and that if you get Honors you should also get into your LEP. Each seems to be a different decision and from my observations, hardly anyone gets ALL the top “gifts.”

D24 shows all docs submitted before 11-1 and active EA app on portal but still no update or decision. I see one other anxious soul in the same position. Anyone else or is this very isolated?

Quote from CS website “If you are accepted to the university but not to Computer Science, you MUST be prepared to pursue an alternative major. There are many other computing majors at UMD including: Geospatial Data Science, Immersive Media Design, Information Science, Information Systems, Social Data Science, and Technology and Information Design”

It seems like every year a few people get stuck like this. I’ve seen at least 3 people on FB tonight saying they don’t have a decision either. Definitely send them an email now and plan to call first thing Monday morning.

It really depends on what kind of roles your kid is interested in.

The vast majority of jobs are simply programming jobs where you write programs to automate processes. Most of the time you’re implementing well known patterns but not really “inventing” something brand new. As others have said, you can get these jobs with a wide range of majors, and they do pay well.

On the other hand, for (higher paying) roles that are on the cutting edge of software development (usually quite research heavy) - think: the brains behind Siri or ChatGPT, the search algorithm that powers Google, an on-the-fly language translator, etc.; then you’re really going to need a CS degree or an advanced degree in a related research field. A CS degree from UD will be fine, but might need more outreach and effort to get the right role vs a CS degree from UMD.
A math degree can help you get into quantitative roles but the firms that hire for these roles are very brand name conscious.

I’d suggest going with UDel.

True, as I may have mentioned earlier, DS22 was admitted to engineering, but didn’t get honors or any LLC. Rigor/NMF/1550/4.0 unweighted etc. Was pretty disappointed (had already received Honors at Purdue so was hoping for honors at UMD). And yet, he was offered 8k per year! DS24 with almost the same stats (1540/3.9 unweighted/Rigor and better extra curriculars, as of now NMSF) just was admitted to BSOS with Carillion. Also disappointed as was interested in Scholars or Honors. I see that you can self nominate for Scholars (or at least you could - the form doesn’t work). Does anyone know if this is still true?

I believe it’s still true. They tend not to open links too far ahead. Looks like it will open March 15th.

You can consider a Computer Engineering degree from UMD. With a Computer Engineering degree you should be able to get the same kind of software development jobs that you could get with CS. This is what we are planning to do, have option of CS at Penn State, Minnesota etc but will likely do Computer Engineering at UMD.

My daughter was accepted OOS (from North Carolina) for Fall 2024, with Honors College invite:
Unweighted GPA = 4.0
Weighted GPA = 4.65
SAT - 1450
ACT - 35
High school is a public STEM magnet, so almost every course is Honors or AP level.
She’s also high-functioning Level 1 (mild) autistic. I’m immensely proud of her. Also admitted to UGA (her current favorite), Virginia Tech, NC State, and Appalachian State (waiting on Honors College decisions for all of these).

But computer engineering is also an LEP.
