We attended Admitted Student Day yesterday. Very well done presentations. Lots of opportunities for kids.

We ate at the Yahentamitsi dining hall. Food was quite good. Given that we had eaten at UMass, known for the reputation of its food, last weekend, this was a pleasant surprise.

The campus has serious construction going on, about the only downside we could find.

They do not admit by school/major. Admissions decides who is admitted to UMD and who gets into special programs like honors. Business only decides which admitted students who listed business as intended major start as business majors.

I realize that. But my point was that theres a lot of smart kids being admitted to UMD. So I wasnt expecting any merit scholarship for my daughter as a result. I wasnt getting into the details of the admission process. But thanks for clarifying that for others.

Hi,
I have 2 questions if anyone can help.
Is Carillon Communities same as getting into Honors college? Is it part of honors college?
I know the number of seats have been reduced dramaticaaly for CS, Is it same for Computer Engineering as well? Who can I send an email at the UMD office to get help on that?
Thank you!

From what I understand Carillon is not same as honors. It is LLC (live and learn community). UMD has few of them and this one of them.

I asked some recent UMD graduates about it, and they viewed Carillon as a form of recognition like honors. The honors programs are 4-year commitments, the scholars programs are 2 years, and Carillon programs are just 1 year. It’s apparently for those kids that UMD saw something in, but couldn’t put them in honors or scholars. But also, you can apply for scholars and honors within your college later. Additionally, there are a lot of other programs and parts to the school that the kids can apply to later or may develop an interest in, so the 1-year Carillon program may actually good length of time for some students who may want to engage in other things at the school. This was the info I got.

I think all engineering majors are Limited Enrollment Programs. You can contact Clark for more info

You can only join Scholars if you are an incoming student and self-nominate and there is space available in a Scholars group. Resources for Invited Students | College Park Scholars

You can apply to join Honors after the 1st year. "Current students who have completed one year of coursework at the University of Maryland can apply to join the Honors College. Admission for current UMD students is highly competitive and the number of spaces available is extremely limited. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 is required to apply.

Upperclassmen may also become members of the Honors College by joining a Departmental Honors Program in their academic department or college."

Thanks for the information. I talked to my daughter about these options because she initially wanted to be in honors. I think she’s happy with Carillon for now. It seems like there are so many other programs, majors, and minors to explore at the school, so I think the 1-year Carillon commitment might actually be better for her. It will give her some flexibility to explore these other options. When I went to UMD thousands of years ago, I could’ve gotten into honors as a freshman, but I chose not to because I didn’t want the extra requirements. I ended up joining honors in my junior and senior year instead. That actually worked out better for me too because I changed majors from medical to business in my sophomore year. So that is always an option.

Same here - maintain a 3.2 gpa; attempt at least 12 credits a semester; and complete 30 credits per year.

Unlike CS however, if you complete the engineering prerequisites as a student in L&S, you will more than likely be accepted later on. This is the first year that if you complete the CS prerequisites, you are NOT likely to get a spot.

I didn’t get an email for merit but I got one saying I got my first choice for Scholars, does that mean no merit? I was admitted to Scholars OOS.
