Umich has been rumored to defer in EA due to the sheer volume of the applications and AOs not been able to go through them by the EA deadline. FWIW, we were advised to submit as early as we can manage for this very reason. Is it possible that this is the case of your deferral?

yes , son applied early to a top 5, also deferred (=reject). so he will send letter of continued interests to Umi.
A family friend’s daughter got accepted today (I don’t know any stats whatsoever just that she’s a good student) but knowing that decisions were coming out today made me check CC because I went through this process two years ago with my twin boys. U-M was one of my twins’ top 2 choices. (U-M or UCLA or bust) That’s it. That’s all he wanted. The other twin had at least 4 other schools he would rather attend if admitted and only agreed to apply to U-M for his brother as a joint school that they both would apply to (outside of the UC system). That twin made it clear what his top choices were but would have certainly attended U-M after all the dust settled on the admissions cycle had he not gotten into his other top choices. Needless to say, of course, the twin that had U-M lower on his list was the one accepted on the EA date and the one that would have loved nothing else but to attend U-M was deferred on the EA date. The twin that was accepted to U-M found out mid-March that he was accepted into his top choice and he then declined the admission offer to U-M once he got into the other school in March well before the May 1st date and well before the RD decisions came out for U-M. To decline admission was actually the right thing to do. But when RD was announced for U-M the twin who had been on pins and needles waiting for his decision was waitlisted and swore that it was his brother’s fault because his brother had declined admission too early and he was convinced he would have gotten in if U-M still thought the twin was coming Ultimately the twin that desperately wanted U-M moved off the waitlist and is there now and absolutely loves it. He is a Michigan man through and through (we’re from California) The other twin loves where he is. College admissions are wild and unpredictable and honestly, it feels personal but it isn’t. We all know how hard our kids work for this moment but so do thousands upon thousands of other kids. No one wants to see their child disappointed. There are so many amazing kids and they can’t all get into all the same schools. The top schools are trying to find their fit as much as the kids are trying to find theirs when selecting the schools they want to apply to. Good luck to everyone who was postponed. It’s a journey so hang in there.
Son accepted

Question- do students still go spend the night at colleges when deciding? My daughter was the COVID year and so did not get a chance. WAY back when I applied, the school itself would arrange a sleepover visit. Would it be weird to reach out to friends of friends to ask about visiting?

Haven’t seen the details in the ‘postponed’ letter yet - curious what they are asking for this year? Is it just the written student LOCI, or are there any other updates requested on senior year fall grades or any other new info? Thx.
