University of Michigan Ann Arbor Early Action Fall 2024

UMICH is my absolute dream school and when I got in yesterday I was so surprised, because I was OOS so I was expecting a postponed, and absolutely happy but also a bit sad because I have no idea how I am going to afford it. The funny thing is, I got a full tuition scholarship at UMIAMI for all 4 years, but I am conflicted. Do any of you think that if I tell/notify the admissions or financial aid office of Michigan that I received a full tuition ride scholarship from UMIAMI, UMICH can help me in any way? Obviously I am going to apply to lots and lots of scholarships and wait for the financial aid notice to be sent out but the stress of getting in has now turned to the stress of being able to afford it. Any advice or tips on how you could afford UMICH or what I can do??:pray:t2::pray:t2: Thank you all:blue_heart::yellow_heart:

Another thing is that I’m not necessarily low income nor think I could receive one of their highly selective merit awards. The reason I love UMICH sm is because I want to go to law and got in for Poli Sci so I truly think Michigan is a better choice than Miami. I also know of alumni scholarships but I am from Virginia and the alumni clubs are not as major here.

Time to lose that notion. There is no dream school. Sorry to be so candid.

There are schools you can afford to attend, that you’d love to attend.

There are thousands a year who attend their “dream school” and yet transfer out.

But there is no dream in strangling yourself or your family financially.

Right now (before inflation and without things like Greek life), U of M is $76,294 the first two years and $80,364 the final two.

If you couldn’t have afforded it, you never should have applied - just speaking the truth. It’s a great get and congrats - but it doesn’t mean you should have applied. My kids did not apply to any schools they had zero chance of attending, no matter how much they liked them (and that includes Michigan btw - because I’d never pay that much, especially for a large public).

The U of Miami is an OUSTANDING school. In many cases, the outcomes will be similar, depending on major. Can you afford the $23K for housing they estimate?

You can tell Michigan of your scholarship but they’re not going to match. They’re a public school, there to support Michigan residents. Could it be that you qualify for need aid?

Many students are in this boat - and those that choose excessive loans, in the far majority of cases, make the wrong decsion.

Again, there are no dream schools - all have ad roommates or profs, big classes, bad food…whatever.

Strangling yourself financially is never a smart choice.

You might seek if your parent’s employers offer aid or some local groups - but getting significant $$ is highly unlikely.

The Miami offer sounds FANTASTIC - and it’s a very fine school.

Best of luck.

You are 100% right. I would never want to do that to my parents and am so extremely blessed to have received that scholarship from UMIAMI. But just wanted to ask and try!! For Michigan if I can😅 You are right it’s NEVER justifiable to be in such debt, just wanted to ask and try. Thank you for the guidance.

Perhaps someone else can tell you how to negotiate them - but I can’t imagine it’s a possibility. Public schools usually you can’t…and if you could, it’d be like or higher schools and while U of Miami is very very strong, they go by rankings, etc. and it’s not quite there.

Best of luck and congrats - full tuition at Miami is something many students would turn down any other school in the country for…it’s that fantastic a get.

Congrats to you.

I have a question. If someone can help Id appreciate it I’m in state

So my yearly income is below the go blue requirment however my assets are significantly higher than the requirement to qualify. Is it still possible for me to get a good amount of aid or am I cooked.

Will depend. Once assets are over $75k, you don’t qualify but as they say, U-M is the only public university in Michigan that covers 100% of demonstrated financial need of eligible Michigan residents.

That means, in looking at your CSS profile, they will determine your need and provide you aid if you qualify.

Your family will be expected to spend their assets as an investment in your future.

Good luck.

I know people who have successfully asked for more money at public universities, but it was between universities offering automatic merit aid (discounts). The parents were able to get a few thousand dollars more.

In the FAqs, it says that test results can be sent if postponed. There is also a button to do so.

Congratulations on your full ride to Miami.

Michigan will congratulate you on your achievement but getting a full ride if based on merit is kinda a big deal for Miami. So it doesn’t hurt calling financial aid and asking. If you don’t ask you won’t know. I would actually leave the finances to your parents. They will ask questions that I doubt you would know. OOS merit is slim but financial aid they do give. But if you say heh, I have a full ride if you don’t match it I will go to Miami. They will encourage you to do that. Miami is just as hard as a get for many as Michigan. I wouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth as they say. If your parents can’t cleanly afford Michigan without taking out loans, mortaging the house or retirement, then it’s not worth it for any reason. Starting your life without school loans is a huge gift. My kids are grateful for that and see many of their friends with very large loans they have to make payments on now. No debt is the best debt to have.

Good Luck.

Michigan gives financial aid to both instate and out of state residents. Have your parents call and see what’s possible. Many have gotten more then what they would have assumed. They are there to help you.

I don’t know the specific answer, but if you are accomplished enough to get into U Michigan you will be able to do great things at U Miami. Also, getting those scholarships is quite a prestigious thing in addition to being financially helpful

Congratulations. You are obviously a very strong student with a great HS record.

That said you will have no better chance for law school from Umich than Umiami. If you get very good grades and a very good LSAT score you will get into good law schools. Maybe even with scholarship money. Law schools basically only look at GPA and LSAT. If you look at the colleges Harvard Law students attended you will see many went to lower ranked collegs than either UMICH or UMiami.

Also be aware that law school is very expensive. Lots of schools cost over 60K for tuition alone.

Save your and your parents money, go enjoy the nice weather and study hard and great things are in store for you.

Go to Umiami and save the money for law school. I am both a lawyer and UM grad and have two kids enrolled currently in Ann Arbor and will suggest that you should celebrate and take pride in the admission but it’s not worth it when you have awesome opportunity with Miami. Michigan poli-sci is not going to make a difference in your legal career. Excel at Miami, do well on LSAT and you’ll have many law school options.

@Knowsstuff Two questions for you. My daughter was admitted into the College of Engineering. 1. How do we set up her UMich Wolverine Access or do we just set up a Friend Account until we pay a deposit? 2. Is there a separate Engineering scholarship page similar to the LSA Scholarship page? Thank you for your help. She has a full tuition ride a Purdue, but we think her heart is at UMich. EEEK.

The email /letter of acceptance should have the ID unless their doing things differently this year Set Up Your Uniqname and Account | ITS Documentation

My son went to Michigan for engineering and is a recent grad. Purdue is great also and full ride is tough to beat. Pm me with any questions about Michigan engineering. My sons opportunities even though self made were unbelievable. The culture of the schools differ also. At Purude there is a co-op culture that even though Michigan has it isn’t as prevelant. This is neither good or bad. Just different.

Scholarships come in different forms.

Congratulations on her acceptances. Again, reach out if needed

Once after accepting the offer, can nursing student apply for merit scholarships? Will this be separate from LSA or engineering?
Does in-state get any merit at all?

Yes, Yes, Yes she screamed in “Harry met Sally” :joy:
