University of Michigan Ann Arbor Early Action Fall 2024

for the postponed folks, do you think the 250 word essay will be read? or just read if they are on the fence with you in RD? Also, how do we submit mid-semester grades? Counselor upload thru common app? I do not think U mich uses SRAR.

Thank you so much! We missed reading this.

That is the big debate. They started this since families kept sending in stuff that Michigan never wanted so they gave families a vehicle to send stuff to make them feel like they’re doing everything possible for acceptance.

But, one thing I have learned is with college admissions… Nothing is optional. Many will tell you that they got in without it and many will tell you they think the LOCI sealed the deal.

It takes less then 10 minutes to write. So, I would definitely write it. They want you to show interest. Going out of your way to do this shows interest, right?

Also many fall off at this point and decide to go elsewhere. They don’t want to write additional essays.

I have known people who have written the 250-word essay who have been accepted, waitlisted, and rejected, and I have known applicants who didn’t write it who were accepted. I would say that any outcome is in play.

I don’t see any downside in writing it. Even if it isn’t read thoroughly, there is value in it as a sign of interest that could be helpful if they are considering yield in a decision.

I will definitely try but just want to say thank you everyone for the advice and guidance :heartpulse:

Congratulations! Getting in is stressful, but so are the finances. Don’t let anyone on here tell you otherwise. Or convince you that you had no business applying! :rage: Most people rely on financial aid to go to college and need to get their offer before they can make a decision. Also remember that not everyone on here has your best interests at heart since they’re competing with you and many others for relatively few spots. Run your own race, and ignore the bad advice.

I concur 100%. FA and merit, even for OOS, can be unpredictable, sometimes quite different than indicated EFCs. IMO so long as you’re also applying to schools you know with certainly in advance that you can afford and are likely to get into, applying to other places where this is not so certain is fine. You never know what sorts of scholarships or whatever you may be able to cobble together. You need to be that much more proactive to hunt for that, but you gotta be in it to win it.

Congratulations! May I ask if the GPA you mentioned is uw or weighted? Is GPA 4.0 if a student get one or two B?

recruited athlete?

curious if twin ended up at UCLA

That’s unweighted. My school grades out of 100. And I think 95 and up is equal to 4.0.

when do scholarships and aid come out?

Writing LOCI now. Fingers crossed

No. MIT. Neither were admitted into UCLA. That’s why the college roulette wheel is truly not personal and absolutely no reflection on a child’s worth or value. For both of my boys, the schools they each were accepted to versus the ones they were waitlisted or rejected from really have no pattern. Good luck to everyone!

Sorry - there are certain schools that some have no business applying.

If Michigan truly offers huge merit, that’s different. I don’t think they do.

Nonetheless, you can only go to one and the student had a wonderful offer at Miami.

If they choose Michigan, if it’s ok for the family - it’s great.

If not, he’ll be fine.

I think the point is being taken out of context though.

The point - or situation is - the student really wants to go there even thought is’s a $50K+ delta a year that sounds like the family can’t afford as they don’t qualify for need.

Perhaps the comment would have been better suited to an Ivy - where you can’t get merit aid…hence my daughter wasn’t allowed to apply because it couldn’t possibly make the $50K max.

But either way - OP is in a great position!!!

We can all agree on that.

Does go blue count a houses full value for assets or is it capped depending on the family’s income

No he’s not
