When did you get the invitation? Is this only for LSA committed students?
The LEAD Scholars program offers merit-based scholarships and empowering community support to admitted underrepresented minority students, affording them the opportunity to expand their knowledge and showcase their talent at the University of Michigan. As the only scholarship program of its kind at U-M, recipients form a diverse community of scholars who grow together through career exploration, alum and peer mentoring, leadership, community service, and social opportunities.
I dont know - i just know DD applied RD and has been asked if she wants to send a LOCI and the space is in her portal for it. Are we sure not everyone has it?
I would do email, chat or phone call to admissions and ask. If you just applied you probably got the notice on a global email. They will let you know if you need to do anything,
Speaking for myself, no, I am most definitely not sure if everyone has it (my two kids applied EA 2 cycles ago) Based on what you’re saying though it sounds like everyone does have it. It just seems odd. Maybe all the portals look the same regardless of the application choice of EA or RD. But having that as an option on the RD application portal seems to be asking an RD applicant to let the admissions team know if they’re still interested. As an RD applicant if you don’t submit an LOCI are you then not considered as a strong candidate for RD admission? That’s the question that pops to mind. It just seems to add an additional layer of worry for already worried kids (and their folks).
They got the email yesterday at some point (2/16). They’re not yet committed. One LSA, the other engineering/CS.
ETA: it was clarified above who is eligible
do you have to have received the LEAD email from umich to apply?
No, but are you an “underrepresented minority” student?
At least when I applied for the scholarship (a couple of years ago, so may not be applicable now), you did not have to be an underrepresented minority. Anyone could apply as long as they met the requirements, which being a minority was not.
Interesting. In reviewing the application, there is a demographics section which must be completed, though there does not seem to be any sort of “you must be X, Y, or Z in order to apply” type filter.
I do wonder though the % of non-URMs awarded the scholarship as compared to total awards.
So I did think I saw it somewhere. If you review all the materials on the program like the three hamburger thing on the top right and read through everything it does give an impression it is more minority based then not. Regardless anyone can apply for anything. But just look at the recent cohorts of student’s. It seems like a great program regardless.
There is also a summer program and I am forgetting the name aimed at students that were accepted but maybe their schools didn’t offer certain classes. It’s like a month before school starts and these kids take classes to get them up to o speed to Michigan’s way and their set with mentors for like two years. Really terrific program’s at Michigan. They have all types of programs so everyone can be successful.
Here you go.
NINE YEARS AFTER LAUNCHING ITS LEAD SCHOLARS PROGRAM to improve diversity and opportunity, the Alumni Association is announcing a $30 million drive to expand the number of scholarships awarded to underrepresented minority students.
Yup the kids are 100% applying thanks. They do qualify btw if URM is a hard restriction, so no issue there.
Awesome. I would apply to everything that sounds interesting and worthwhile. All you need is 1 yes

BTW - everything I posted above and here are different ways to make a large university feel small. Of course 1600 clubs to join also.

Bridge scholar was that summer program that is on here
So Michigan is not extending past May 1st due to delayed Fafsa. They are the only Michigan Public University that also uses the CSS and will use that for the financial awards for now.
Has anybody received estimated fin aid package?
Yes. Last week.
OOS or in-state?
