University of Minnesota Early Action Class of 2030 Official Thread

So C26 randomly checked the portal and noticed today that there is now a green checkmark next to ‘submit first term grades’. Except, first term is not finished and there has been no update to STARS to submit them …we checked to be sure and everything is still just listed as in progress. The update to STARS to add the senior year courses was done 10/10, and nothing has been updated since then. Tracker shows STARS received 10/6 (that was the original one they imported from common app which had left out senior year courses) and the supposed update was yesterday. All rather odd…

I would be cautiously optimistic.

S26 was directly admitted to Carlson after being requested to submit mid-year grades. It’s a top choice, so he is feeling great. Attendance will come down to money — I have no idea what to expect from U of M in terms of scholarships. It seems like the kids we know from our area in IL get decent merit? He knows we have a budget, and is thankfully very interested in his #2 choice Miami of Ohio, which has given him a huge scholarship and puts the cost way below budget.

Would you mind sharing stats? My OOS S26 is anxiously waiting for Carlson. (And is into Miami as well)

Anyone hear a decision today? It’s the last Monday before EA decisions are due so I thought today could be the one my son would finally hear… no such luck. In the past does anyone know if they’ll truly wait until the 31st? Or is it likely Friday?

I think they normally come out quite late in the day? I hope they’d just drop the remaining decisions tonight, though UMN has pretty much fallen off my kid’s list. Hard to tell from last year”s threads as there are no specific dates to see exactly when the final decisions came.

Same for my kid. He applied way back in October and because of all the other EA decisions that have come in lately, he has kind of forgotten about UMN now. But I would like to know the decision, whichever way it goes.

Much the same but with the added issue that UMN has secondary competitive admission to their major and they are direct admit at all the other admits so far. Bit of a pity as the school looks good in a lot of ways for them but there’s no need for that added stress when there are other options.

Did anyone hear? I’m guessing they thought by this stage they might as well release the remaining decisions at the same time?

Nope, did not hear and his portal says the same message as always… that decisions will be sent by January 31st. UMN was my sons top choice, he was very, very excited about it after we toured and now he is very put off by this whole process. He got into Pitt 3 weeks after he applied there and it’s looking more and more appealing. It would be nice if they had any rhyme or reason to their admissions notifications - but they don’t. Some RD students we know heard back weeks later, meanwhile many EA students haven’t heard anything. Decisions appear to come out still on Monday’s around 4-4:30pm. Clearly this week will be an exception given that the deadline is Saturday. We’re anticipating a deferral or rejection at this point.

I wouldn’t get that pessimistic- last year had a number of acceptances at the end.

Kid has same reaction vs Pitt - the quick admit vs UMN wanting mid year grades and nothing more till now - has removed any excitement about this school and displaced it to Pitt (which on any metric looked harder to get into for C26). Even if they did direct admit it would probably still be bottom of their list now. I don’t think UMN does themselves any favors by this “technically we’re EA but yeah we roll out a bunch of decisions weekly too” approach.

Agreed. My son liked UMN after visiting but we’ve heard from all but two schools at this point and he’s gotten excited about other places in the interim.

My sons portal just updated an hour ago to show: **Supplemental Submissions Checklist, Senior Year First Term Grades.
**
Very interesting they would request this so LATE into January and so close to the deadline. I had updated his STARS last Friday, and it shows submitted yesterday. His counselor also submitted the Mid Year Report in Common App.

Was it actually a request or did they just maybe add it in to reflect they got the materials?

It was a request… once I click the link it said: Hi, (sons name)!

The STARS enables you to provide updated academic information throughout your senior year. Please provide updated academic information once available at the conclusion of your 1st term (tri, quarter, semester). In the meantime, know your application is still considered “on time” for the Early Action I Deadline.

But it shows the green checkmark as received right? Maybe they just have one block of text to go with that particular checklist :woman_shrugging: - especially if it was only there after the grades had been submitted? FYI C26 had that from day 1 on their portal.

Nope it shows a red X and says “Awaiting”. But then when I click the 2nd link through (after clicking first link with message above)… then it says:
Excellent!

Your application and your completed STARS have been successfully linked together.

It may take between 24 and 72 hours for University of Minnesota - Twin Cities* to show receipt of your STARS in their application portal or status screen.

Ever since he applied mid-Sept. his portal has had 4 green checkmarks next to:

Application for Admission
Self-reported Transcript and Academic Record (STARS)
Self-Reported ACT or SAT Score
$55 Application Fee

With the same message on top: APPLICATION COMPLETE! All of your required application materials have been received by the November 1 Early Action I Deadline. You will receive an admission decision in this Application Tracker by January 31.

And this morning it looked the same, him and I have been obsessively checking this week lol. So that new supplemental request just popped up at around 11am.

Ok that’s weird, but I still think the timing suggests it was prompted by the grades being submitted?
