University of Minnesota Twin Cities Early Action for Fall 2025 Admission

Ok, my son was notified today of acceptance in the College of Liberal Arts, and the letter said they would update if acceptances to other colleges were granted. He applied to Business as his first choice. Anyone have any idea the likelihood he still might get into Carlson? Would merit aid have already been announced in his acceptance?

My daughter is in the same boat–admitted this afternoon to CLA. First choice college was CBS. We are wondering about the likelihood of her getting in. Maybe closer to RD notification? Still excited that she was admitted though. Good luck everyone.

My son was accepted to Carlson in October and his merit came two months later in December.

Hi - is the merit visible in the portal or just in a separate email?

He received an email notification for status update to check his portal. There was a scholarship letter in it.

Did everyone get decisions for their remaining schools? We still haven’t heard from S25’s first choice school/major.

My daughter still hasn’t heard from her 1st choice college either, but we figured that the notification might come any time up until the RD decision date, since she’s already got an acceptance within the EA timeline. I want my daughter to call admissions and ask. I’ll post here if we get any info. Good luck!

My kid is also waiting for first choice college (Carlson business). We reached out to AO to get more info… got a reply that CBS is very competitive and he was on waitlist for it. The chances to hear back before the RD deadline for CBS from the waitlist is very low in general , though a small number (variable per year) do get admitted. So, he was advised to be prepared to enroll in college of liberal arts (that he was offered) and the transfer process for CBS is also competitive. Even if internal transferred after one or two terms, CBS will still require 4 full years, so graduation time will most likely be extended for internal transfer students to CBS. Do enquire the transfer requirements of each college if you have those in mind and join in an alternate choice college. Given the increased application all around, high numbers of deferrals/waitlist, the chances of being accepted to first choice college is even lesser this year if not offered initially. . My kid will only join if he gets his first choice- CBS.

Wow, that’s a lot of good information. Thank you for sharing! It amazes me that the university didn’t proactively give out any info and is just leaving the rest of the kids in the dark. The process is stressful enough without having to guess the school’s intent.

Yeah… it seems CLA was not even his second choice college! He chose Mathematics/Data science in another college but was given CLA which has minor version of Math… In the email, the AO mentioned that UMN admission committee decides on the basis of overall candidate academic strengths and profile in recommending alternate choices… We applied late, so likely CBS and second choice college were already full… It seems CLA is some sort of filler for students they want to come in and explore. However, the AO was very forthright and helpful in his lengthy email response for sure.

Parent of 2026 kid here. Would anyone be willing to share stats for their kid who got accepted for Biology major(College of Biological Sciences)? Trying to decide whether my Avg GPA but better than average Test score kid should keep University of Minnesota on their college list for next year. Thank you in advance.

I have been in your shoes this year. kids applying to Eng/Business major . Despite the Test optional policy of colleges and favored by many kids, for a kid with average GPA, SAT score of 1400 and above ( usually in 60-80% range for most T40-T70 schools) will open many doors along with good curriculum rigor and decent EC’s. Colleges know that with grade inflation all around in high schools, between 3.5 and 4.0 Kids there is not much difference when it comes to college outcomes. AP scores are also important- 4 or 5 … standardized scores along with GPA gives them a more complete picture. My kids have been accepted to at least 5 target schools each and only one rejection so far. Good luck!

Looking ahead for Class of 2030. My OSS son is interested in the CSB. Plays 2 sports (with demanding offseason schedule) and works 10-12 hours a week. He will have 4 APs and 2 dual credit classes when he applies next Fall. He’s gotten A’s in all of his AP/Honors classes (math and sciences) but B’s in foreign language/English. Thus, his GPA is 3.7/4.0. His SAT (taken once) is 1290 – is well below the average accepted score, so probably won’t submit. Has anyone gotten in to Carlson with these stats?
