University of Pittsburgh Class of 2022

@syd24ranger, It typically takes five weeks from the day the application was complete and ready to go to the Admissions Committee.

Best,
A Pitt Admissions Staffer

Son just received acceptance. His stats are:

Accepted
Major: Engineering
Applied: 11/13/17
Decision: 12/5/17
Residency: OOS

ACT: 29 (34 math)
SAT: N/A
GPA: 4.05 (weighted)
9 AP classes
Rank: N/A (but probably a hair below top 10%)
Activities: Multiple years of two varsity athletics, jobs, band

What do you think my chances are getting into main campus with a 2.6 GPA and 1460 SAT scores (750 reading and writing), 710 (Math)

@Jhp1599 Poor. You would most likely be admitted to a branch campus of both Pitt and Penn State. You should be admitted to West Virginia University, if you’re not interested in a branch campus.

Figured I would post my stats and merit scholarship for prospective students’ curiosity:
I received a full tuition scholarship and an invitation to apply for Chancellor’s.
Admitted to Dietrich for Biological Sciences
W GPA: 94.020
ACT: 34
SAT: 1490 (780 English+Reading, 710 math)
Class Rank: N/A
7 APs ( 4s on Biology & World History, 5s on Language & Comp and APUSH, rest are TBD)
I’m OOS from NY, I have a lot of ECs and volunteer hours.

I’ve noticed that my academic credentials aren’t nearly as impressive as others who have received full tuition (or applicants who received less merit) so I think that just goes to show how important the short answer questions are in the scholarship selection and just how holistic Pitt’s admissions process is. I’d love to answer any questions!! Good luck to all of you in your application process

congratulations @oliviags22 ! When did you apply?

Congratulations @oliviags22 That is amazing. I so dearly wish my daughter had done as well with merit. Is Pitt your #1 choice? Good luck with Chancellors…my daughter just submitted her essays last week. I know it’s a long shot but I wish you both much luck. May I ask if you sent your AP scores to Pitt? My daughter has 4 APs under her belt with high scores and is taking 5 this year. I wonder if she shouldn’t have submitted AP scores to be considered for more merit?

@oliviags22 --wow. Pitt is killing me this year. Those are the same stats of many many many students from last year who got 10-15K including those who wrote amazing enough essays to also get nominated for Chancellor’s and interviewed for Chancellor’s so I am doubtful it was essays. Most of them had way more APs too (which I know for a fact APs don’t factor in at all in their merit decisions because they don’t even ask for the scores on the application)

Do you have any other hooks such as first generation or minority status?

Congrats on your scholarship and I truly hope you attend Pitt. Call me an emotional sap and I know my head recognizes this is all a business and a game but there are kids and parents who would be ecstatic with that award and then when we see them pass up the award it’s heartbreaking.

Does having the Accept/Decline button options on the University of Pittsburgh app mean that I’ve been accepted? I haven’t gotten an email or anything in the mail yet, so I wasn’t sure. I don’t expect to get anything in the mail soon about the decision because I applied a bit over three weeks ago.

If the email comes today, it will be around 3 pm EST most likely.

Then a letter should follow a few business days after that.

Has anyone received any scholarship notifications this week? @oliviags22 , was your notification delivered recently?

Has anyone who applied late Oct/early Nov received scholarship notification?

@Kayak24 my daughter applied 10/24, accepted 11/7, received GAP and honors college letter 11/14.

We have not heard re any merit yet. Hoping we hear soon!

My son just got his acceptance from Pitt. He sent the application on 10/14 and it was marked received on 10/16. So it took about three weeks.

@AmyBeth68 I had decent AP scores too, but I don’t think Pitt had a spot to mention any AP scores.

We sent AP scores when she took the exams in May of senior year, they went right to Pitt for free.

@jcruz98 i applied august 1st!

Good luck to your daughter with Chancellor’s! I did submit my AP scores, but I don’t think they factor in to merit. @AmyBeth68

^meant to say she put Pitt on the exam booklet, that’s how the scores were sent for free

@carachel2 I was just as surprised as you were- I expected to get $5,000 at most from Pitt. I had been waiting to commit to Pitt (my first choice by far) since the day I got my acceptance, but we didn’t know if we’d be able to afford it so I had to apply to other schools (Case Western Reserve and Northeastern) that give better financial aid. I have been committed since the day I received my scholarship in the beginning of November. Please understand that I know how lucky I am and am extremely grateful to get a full tuition scholarship to my first choice school.

As for other “hooks,” no, I am not a minority or a first generation student; I’m a white female living in an upper-middle class suburb. I can’t be sure of the exact elements of my application that earned me full tuition, but it could be my academics, my 100+ hours of community service, my leadership experience in Model United Nations organizing and running a conference of over 300 students, my accomplishments as a pianist, my writing skills in the short answer questions, or something else entirely. How Pitt selects their scholarship recipients is not my business.

I hope you and your child enjoy the rest of your application process!

I applied 8/1, accepted 9/13, and received merit 11/6. Hope this helps! @Kayak24
