University of Pittsburgh Class of 2024 Official Discussion Thread

I applied 11/20 as a computer engineering major. Here are my basic stats
SAT: 1270
GPA: 3.78 unweighted
I’m not really expecting to get in but I put it in as my only in state school. When do you think I should hear back? Before Christmas?

Acceptance stat share - OOS (NJ):

  • Son applied 10/31 via Common App
  • Accepted on 11/29 via email with personalized video, packet in mail came shortly after
  • I have no idea when the buttons changed, because honestly, I had no clue about the whole mobile site until I scrolled back through this board ;-)
  • Dietrich A&S, Political Science is intended major, Italian as minor. Made it clear in one of his essays that he was extremely interested in Pitt Grad School of Public and Intl Affairs or Pitt Law as a future path
  • 1350 SAT, 29 ACT....not a great standardized test taker
  • Total of 5 AP classes, 2 Jr Year and 3 Sr Year. Remaining classes are honors.
  • 4.27 weighted GPA, I have no idea what the unweighted is
  • Top 10% of his class from public high school with strong Pitt acceptance over past few years
  • Completed all of the essays
  • Visited campus April of Junior Year and met with Pitt admissions rep during in-high school visit early senior year
  • Extremely unique ECs including international awards from UN Foundation and the Jefferson Foundation; played large role in his essays
  • Strong achievement in choral activities - all county, state, region, US. Not intending to be music major but made it quite clear he would participate in formal Pitt Chorus activity in one of his essays
  • Mulitiple local and national leadership roles with LGBTQ organizations, played large role in his essays

Pitt is extremely high on his list, but awaiting a few others. I personally loved everything about the school - probably the best tour we had.

@TheVulcan has your son heard about honors yet? Mine was accepted and received a merit package, but no word on honors college.

@TwoFabKids I’m not @TheVulcan but my son got in with merit aid but no word about Honors.

Honors announcement comes out Jan 12th, according to the admissions website. Did you hear about the merit scholarship at the same time you heard about acceptance?

What “buttons” is everyone talking about? Is this something on the Passport website (mypitt–>Check my Application -->self service–> admissions–>check application Status)?

I found the direct link in message #9 BUT don’t know how to get there from the mypassport website where it takes you to the picture of the Cathedral of Learning and the “ASK CATHY”

1350 SAT is well above the 90th Percentile, complaining about test taking ability with that score is not only wrong, but it sets unrealistic expectations/standards for other parents and impressionable children who read this forum.

@TwoFabKids, no news from Pitt since acceptance letter 3 months ago.

Additional instructions can be found in post #18

@TheVulcan
My son reached out to our UPitt Rep - he is not in the running for GAP. But for merit the response was - it depends when our file is presented to the committee. Awards are made until March 1st.

@TheVulcan my son got accepted, then invited to apply for BS/MD GAP (which he did) then the merit award letter came. But, nothing about honors college. Hoping soon.

@brown2024, thanks for the update.

Son just received Honors admission and merit at OSU.

Waiting to hear from many more schools, but at this point Pitt would have to offer Chancellor’s to be considered.

@vulcan congratulations. I’m glad to hear there’s a good option for your kid. ?

I got accepted as a prospective neuroscience major (first choice). I got the video on 12/10 and official letter today (12/12).

My son received a response saying that Pitt would like him to submit his grades from the first half of his senior year once they become available. This is neither an acceptance or rejection, nor a typical deferral. Does anyone have insight on whether this is a reason to keep hopes up?

Absolutely! My older son, who is a junior, got this letter. He submitted his grades and was accepted a week later. I think they just want to see that students are maintaining during senior year. Good luck!

My son was admitted some time back to the Engineering GAP (he is studying Computer Engineering). In state, $10K off of tuition each year. No decision on honors yet.

Congrats @Onelove432 !!!

@mcc1970 - Thanks! That is very encouraging.
