@Jalaba hey if this year people with lower stats have gotten the smaller scholarships then i say hey anything can happen. all you can do is wait and hope that your kid’s application and essays seem real nice to the scholarship folks
Maybe I should already know this but I’m going to ask… Are merit/scholarship awards based on just that and not your financials? The program my kid is accepted into is a 6-year program and the tuition goes up considerably starting the 3rd year because it will be a professional program. We are within the 10 years from retirement time-frame so some merit award would be helpful. Ugh.
i believe it is strictly merit based but if you ever need more money don’t be afraid to call up the financial aid office and ask for more need based money
oh shoot i completely forgot about this but i emailed the manager for the honors college a while back and he told me that “The Honors College does offer a guaranteed financial aid award for acceptance“. So for those still waiting on scholarship if you got into the honors college there’s still hope!!!
Are AP scores considered in the merit review as mine don’t show up on my portal under scores? For the record, I self-reported them on the Common App but didn’t send them in through College Board.
1530 sat, 4.0 unweighted, lots of extracurricular activities and received $0 in scholarships. My financial aid package is just $5500 in loans.
Son just got an email this morning that he will not be getting a Nordenberg interview. Looks like we’re headed down the pike to Morgantown for the full tuition scholarship. Good luck to everyone here!
What is your intended major?
@Jalaba if you are talking about pharmacy, my D’s scholarship was good for four years, two years pre-pharmacy and P1 and P2.
Then she was considered to be a graduate student for P3 and P4.
If all you have been offered is the unsubsidized loan, that means that your FAFSA EFC is at or above the COA.
You cannot get need based aid if you don’t have need.
Got an email last evening - accepted to U Pitt Johnstown.
Applied 11/30 - received request to update SRAR with midterm grades 1/20 - received decision 1/31.
OOS
31 ACT
3.75 UW/4.1 W
3 APs
Comp Sci
Applied directly to Pitt website
Wrote all the essays available
Data point - still not showing in the mobile portal when “Accept/Decline Admissions” is clicked, perhaps because it is not a main campus acceptance.
No info about fin aid or merit yet. Very happy to be accepted, but know nothing about the Johnstown campus. Can anyone offer advice?
@mommdc I guess I was hoping some merit would be awarded and didn’t think merit had anything to do with FAFSA. Does it? So far, this is the only school that has not given scholarship money. “Need-based” is relative. I know people who are struggling to get by and still don’t qualify for “need-based” so the qualifications for that is an enigma to me.
Johnstown campus offers several 4 yr degrees, and has student housing.
You might want to visit.
With your stats you.might get about $5,000 merit.
Tuition, fees, room and board are around $24,000 I think.
You might be able to transfer to the main campus later.
Thank you very much, @mommdc . I’ve been accepted to 11 schools, including Temple with decent merit and Allegheny with amazing merit, so looks like I definitely need to plan a PA visit so I can check out the Johnstown campus. Is Johnstown known for its computer science program? I’ve been digging around on their website but info seems somewhat vague. Appreciate your response!
I know this has probably been answered before but are merit scholarships added to the financial aid packages or are they independent?
Any thoughts on receiving the “Personalize Your Pitt Visit” postcard? (D20 received one today.). Is this just typical marketing, or does this mean that Pitt is REALLY interested in getting you on the campus for a visit? I am really hoping that means that Pitt might be considering D20 for a possible scholarship. We are OOS and know that Pitt scholarships are hard to come by, but keeping fingers crossed.
On a side note - In our region (Southern States), it’s pretty easy to go out to any state school website and find a chart with ACT/SAT scores & GPAs and then the minimum amount of scholarship the in-state or out-of-state applicant will receive. This “up in the air” way that Pitt handles it is so foreign to us.
@TwoHighSchoolers —does it say anything on that postcard about being reimbursed for the flight and travel expenses? If so, then it’s a good thing and you should try to make it happen.
As far as merit, Pitt is actually pretty up front with their merit. They have it right on the website. ACT 33,SAT 1480 + high GPA or class rank. It’s competitive merit and not guaranteed so they don’t assign a dollar amount to each score. Do your student’s scores match those scores? If not, chances are pretty slim there will be merit scholarships. Heck even sometimes when they do have those scores, the merit doesn’t automatically happen.
Let’s all be honest: the schools in the south that have automatic scholarships with an automatic merit chart like the one you are describing are not as highly ranked as Pitt. Most higher ranked schools do not give automatic merit. TAMU and UT most certainly do not give automatic merit. The schools are you are talking about are ranked way further down the list than Pitt. I’m not knocking those schools, they are good schools, but rankings are a thing for sure.
OSU’s merit is pretty reliable, in our experience anyway
I don’t know any details about Johnstown computer science. You would be able to ask your questions at a visit.
@Jalaba no, I don’t think FAFSA EFC affects merit.
There is still a chance.
I would recommend you look at the total cost of a pharmacy program.
Pitt has a very good program and it’s one of the few that doesn’t require physics.
You can get a PharmD in six years at Pitt. Temple is 3+4 and Ohio State for example requires a bachelor’s degree before the four year PharmD.
Yes, the postcard does reference reimbursement of part of our travel expenses. We are trying our best to make the campus visit happen.
Oh . . . no offense taken on the Southern state schools. My alma mater is D20’s back up plan, but she is trying hard to NOT go there.
