University of Pittsburgh Class of 2025 Official Discussion Thread

Anybody know anything about Honors notification? Is it just a portal update or an email? Anyone heard anything yet?

Do any of you know if there is no merit award, will they notify the student that there is no merit award?

Thanks

If you do not get merit you won’t get a letter. While you wouldn’t know it from this thread, most people who are admitted do not get any merit. This thread skews towards high stats students.

@Elliot_Hasbrook that gpa is very low for Pitt. I hope you have some safeties.

Financial aid is supposed to be on the portal end of January

Pretty sure last year they said honors was an email. They said we’d know by feb 1

Yeah, I already got into Saint Louis University, so I’m not really worried.

@kibkab2 Where did you see this information? I thought it can come as late as March.

Thanks.

My D applied to the Swanson School of Engineering 11/30; Notified of acceptance via email Jan 4 with paper decision shortly after(paper decision included her acceptance into the Guaranteed Admissions Program for her masters). She just got her decision on merit aid today via email - $10K per year. Her stats: 4.0 unweighted, 1510 SAT; she took mostly all APs last two years plus a few dual enrollments over this past summer. We are instate. Several EC as well. Still waiting to hear on Honors on Feb 1.

Is there any chance the Honors decisions on Monday would be just for the HC and not for main campus? i.e: Rejected from honors but no info about general admission?

yes. i have 2 gpas from 2 schools which aren’t technically combined but would equal a 3.5 overall. My junior year gpa was 3.33 and i got 15k a year from pitt and haven’t been rejected from a school yet. Stats aren’t everything don’t lose hope

Merit award can come as late as March but financial aid packages should be out end of January

I noticed a financial aid grant in my daughters portal a week ago, then she received an email about the award. Then yesterday she received another email that it was done in error and they were not done awarding financial aid. They said a email would come the week of 2/8. So I assume they’ll send it out to everyone then.

Thank you for that info! That helps.

@RockyPA Isn’t Pitt still much less than an Ivy, even with no merit? ($50 K vs. $75 K a year). I can’t imagine Ivy’s are giving >$25 K a year merit?

It depends, Ivy’s give a lot of money in the form of grants not scholarships. Depending on how much you make. In our situation and Ivy would cost about the same as some state schools.

Generally speaking, Ivy’s do not give merit aid, only financial aid based on need. This is true for most of the most competitive schools. Merit aid is used to attract certain students - the most competitive/popular schools therefore have no need for merit aid.

@MDmom2021 yes Pitt definitely costs less than an Ivy…

Total COA for Pitt in state would run 32-35K with no merit. If your D applied to PA scholars or honors, there might still be merit opportunities in February. Best of luck on the rest of your apps, congrats on Pitt admission, it is a great school in a great town.

I assume, the majority of folks are still waiting to hear about merit aid. Hope there are some good offers coming in soon.

Does Honors increase merit aid at all?
