Merit is given out the whole month of February
Thank you!! Fingers crossed! LOL!
Well, my daughter got $5000 from Pitt, $15,000 from UD, $16,000 from UMASS, $17,000 from Temple… Still waiting on others.
Hoping too!
What major did he declare and what are his stats please? are you OOS? We received FA Friday night. Very disappointing and have not heard anything on merit.
My son is out of state and received $8500 in merit. We are going to try to appeal and ask for more but here’s the situation. He got into the business school at Pitt, and he also got into SUNY Buffalo school of management. He was told that he’s waitlisted for the honors program there, and he’s also waiting to hear back from SUNY Binghamton school of management. The question is, do we appeal it now, he just got straight A pluses, his best semester yet and that’s including three AP classes, Or do we wait to see if he got into the honors program at Buffalo or if he gets into the school of management at Binghamton which is a little more prestigious than Buffalo? My gut tells me to wait and see if we can get them to come closer to SUNY prices, because at this point he would likely go to a SUNY over Pitt with 8500, but we would have more information if we waited. Will it be too late at some point to ask for more merit?
Definitely wait! It seems to me there are better offers coming than Pitt!
Pitt is a top choice for him, but we need to bring it closer to SUNY prices!I’m hoping for a bit more bargaining power but I don’t know if they’ll run out of merit money!
I can’t imagine they’ll price match - it’s a public school. They have lots of good applicants.
It’s AWESOME you got $8500 a year. Many of us didn’t get $8.50.
It’s a public school - so they don’t go off their comfort. SUNYs are great schools and while Binghamton may be more prestigious than Buffalo, don’t forget to go for fit. Frankly, Binghamton is known by no one outside the NE. Not saying it’s not a great school it is - but rank alone isn’t a reason to choose a school and Buffalo is similar in status.
Thank you for your opinion, but it is worth asking for more merit if you want to go somewhere, You are correct that the public schools may not negotiate as much as private schools but they may.And they have. It’s certainly worth a try. Just figuring out how best to do it.As far as Binghamton, my son is not planning on going anywhere but the Northeast so that’s not an issue. We’re not looking for name recognition, we’re looking for the best college for my son at the best price. He has his heart set on a particular school and we’re trying to help him get there. Have a great day!
Is there anything freshmen can’t bring for their dorm room? I know some schools ban plug-in fairy lights, plug-in air fresheners, microwaves and coffee makers. How strict is Pitt?
I agree, nothing to be lost by asking for more merit. Need to compose a strong argument based not only on new/recent achievements by your son, but competing offers from a school that is in Pitt’s peer group (or better, I suppose).
You have merit of $8500. What is the target to get the school competitive with SUNYs? Based on personal experience with another college, I think if you are talking about $2000 more, that is doable. Getting much more than that will be a stretch I think, but can’t rule anything out!
My daughter also received the panther pride but it is so low. Will she also get merit aid or is this it I wonder? Im unclear as to if she can get both?
I’m curious about those situations where people are disappointed with the aid package offered by Pitt. (I get being upset about not receiving merit aid.) Are the need based aid packages not meeting your FAFSA EFC?
@lucyt Yes, she can get both panther pride and also merit aid.
Thank you!
did anyone get their fin aid package emailed to them yet?
I got a financial aid email and all I got was loans. does this include merit aid or will that come at a separate time I’m so confused? Just loans???
i didn’t get any email, waiting for the net price to come out
My son received his financial package today via email. It showed his scholarship and loan. The net price for in-state direct cost 31,526.
