University of Pittsburgh Class of 2025 Official Discussion Thread

That’s good to know! The only thing holding her back from W&J is that we live fairly close to campus. We all agree that being in a new environment a little further from home would be a good thing for her. They were very generous with merit, she was invited to the Fellows program and will be doing a Fellows admitted student event in March. But it isn’t her dream school/location. We’ll see. Big decisions ahead.

Good point.

We are OOS. My D got accepted back in Nov. and we are STILL waiting to hear on any type of aid. She has a 4.5 GPA, AP classes, National Honors, volunteer hours, etc. Nothing. This is very disheartening. She applied as undecided with interest in psychology. I called the Financial Aid office on 2/1. They said Aid packages will be released on 2/8. Admissions office said if a student will get merit aid, they will be notified by March.

Did she check her portal? My sons financial aid was in his last night

They award merit through the end of February

I agree. My son was deferred from MIT in December so he decided he was going to fall in love with Pitt and that’s what he did (they make it very easy. They do a great job of selling their school)

We are in state, but with similar stats as your daughter.

Son got $20/k yr merit last night. Was really out of the blue and quite a surprise. I’d been following this thread and had set his and my expectations low based on what I read here. Now it really puts them back in the running. :man_shrugging:

Congrats!! Do you mind sharing stats?

Congratulations!
Does it say what type of merit scholarship he got? Also please share his stats.

We are in the same boat here. Delighted she got in but as an OOS student will need merit aid. Scores are 34 ACT, 3.92 unweighted (her school doesn’t weight) and will have 60 college credits already finished (is in a dual enrollment school). Just got admissions info yesterday - now holding our breath on the $$…

My son also just received $20K merit. OOS, 35 ACT, 10/520, 3.95 unweighted, NMSF, good extracurriculars, engineering major.

Hi, can you help me understand awards? My daughter’s portal says Panther Pride Award and Pitt Success Grant. Are these merit awards? Or is this financial aid package and we’re still waiting on merit? Help! Pitt is top choice, but unrealistic with the money at this point. Thanks!

@Tbowman According to posts on reddit, Panther Pride Award is a financial aid “need-based grant” for out-of-state students.

@Tbowman

Pitt Sucess Grant is also a financial aid need based grant.

What is the Pitt Success Pell Match Program?

You may be eligible for additional grant funds. The federal Pell Grant helps students and families with the greatest financial need pay for college. The Pitt Success Pell Match Program will maximize the power of this federal program by matching it dollar for dollar. This University-wide program will be available to eligible undergraduate students at each of our five campuses (Pittsburgh, Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown, Titusville).

How does the program benefit Pitt students and their families?

  • The Pitt Success Pell Match Program will immediately reduce a qualifying student’s financial obligation, thus reducing overall student loan debt.
  • We expect recipients to be able to reduce time spent at paid employment and to expand their time engaged in studies or University activities with less worry about financial commitments and constraints.

OOS admitted back in September with 10k merit. Just got FA and have the Panther Pride OSS need award. D will be saying “no thank you” to Pitt. She already has several other far more generous offers and is waiting on quite a few more. Unfortunately, Pitt doesn’t make financial sense for us. Good luck to you all!

Thank you so much. This gives me hope that maybe there is still merit coming??? Am I foolish to think this? Pitt is top choice. We are OOS. So far it’s a reach financially even with these awards! NPC definitely showed a better picture or she wouldn’t have applied!

Just curious, what school at Pitt was your daughter accepted to? I’m surprised at how many people received merit already and so many have not. Does it depend on location, school, or major? Pitt is still too expensive for my daughter. Other schools, even in state though are still in same ballpark. I’m hopeful Pitt will come through with merit for her soon. 10K would definitely help them be in the running!

She was admitted to Deitrich with a guarantee to the Doctor of Physical Therapy program. I hope money comes through for your child.

@Tbowman Yes, you should have hope. According to what I have read so far, merit scholarships are awarded during the month of February.
