Does anyone know the EFC range where Pitt would start giving need-based aid? Preliminarily, it looks like (small) merit, loans and work study only in D21’s portal.
It’s amazing how much colleges vary in how they view need.

We are out of state, from TN.
It’s unfortunate. They said typically you need a 33 ACT to get aid. My daughter had a 30 but they said to send it.
The reality is - you can’t fall in love with a school. Kids do - but you have to hope they keep emotions out. Your daughter will have a fantastic experience wherever she ends up - and if you need merit, there’s great opportunities for top kids, especially in the South - Alabama, Ole Miss, etc. She will find a home.
Where did your daughter end up? That’s awesome!!!
University of Delaware, Distinguished Scholar! Was not her first choice (accepted to BU, Northeastern, Drexel, Pitt, Syracuse, UMD, full ride to UVM and I forget the others) but got a great scholarship at UD and they have SO many opportunities that she probably wouldn’t have had as a freshman elsewhere. I am speaking specifically about the honors college. Once she got there she hasn’t looked back and is so happy and because we can pay for what her scholarship doesn’t cover, she will graduate debt free. She loves UD and couldn’t be happier. Well - they are still all online so I guess she will be happier when classes are in person but that applies to many schools during the pandemic. She does live in a dorm and has made wonderful friends. You are absolutely correct in your advice to not fall in love with a school. Go where it makes the most sense. It will all work out.
I saw Pitt’s Portal updated with Federal loan in addition to the University scholarship given in October.
I just spoke with someone in the FA office. She said that they are only just beginning to roll out FA packages so if you don’t see one in your portal now, doesn’t mean you won’t get anything. Also - merit scholarships will continue to be awarded through the end of February, but are only awarded to the top 20% of applicants. Fingers crossed for everyone still hoping for merit!
So if we see the federal loan and nothing else (we don’t qualify for financial aid) then he didn’t get merit money for Pitt? He has a 34 ACT all AP and Honors classes with a 4.0? OOS.
I’m confused!
Applied rolling admissions October 1st, all materials received and confirmed October 2nd. Been 18 weeks, and still no decision. Requested first marking period grades and sent them in November for first quarter. I asked if they meant first quarter or semester and they said they only needed my first quarter grades. I dont understand where my decision is…it’s so frustrating
From what I understand, merit $ would be separate and is still being awarded into March. Good luck.
UD was not my daughter’s choice at first, but Villanova gave her nothing. She’s a sophomore in honors and absolutely loves it there, hopefully they will get back in class. She’s off campus and has been back and forth over break.
My guess is they meant first semester. Hold tight. Sorry it’s taking so long!
No we emailed and they clarified it was just first quarter and they would not require further transcript updates
Daughter has received great merit scholarships from other schools. She has great stats, in state and diverse ECs. Of course, her dream is Pitt. No word on merit, but not holding my breath. She was accepted Jan. 4. Saw financial aid offer today (which we knew would be loans), but it didn’t even include a work study program which she received from all the other schools. Maybe work study doesn’t show up here, but I would think it should because it is part of financial aid package. Disappointing.
The majority of merit goes to OOS students at public schools.
Accepted to Dietrich w/ GAP for GSPIA
Interesting. Which schools have given work study? My son hasn’t received any offers for it yet.
She applied to all in-state schools near home. She received work study from Duquesne, W&J, RMU and Carlow.
My husband is a W&J alum. Loved every minute of his time there and worked part time at a restaurant in town.
Work study eligibility is need.-based Maybe at these much smaller private schools, she is “competing” for work study with a wealthier group of admitted students.
