University of Pittsburgh Class of 2030 Official Thread

Parent of a Pitt Class of 2029 student (current Pitt freshman) and a prospective 2031 Pitt applicant - yesterday, I attended a Pitt admissions event with my younger daughter and I believe the admissions rep said housing is now only guaranteed for 1st year. Can anyone here confirm or deny? I recall guaranteed housing all 4 years when my older daughter applied just last year. I do know record # of her incoming freshman class year may have changed things so wanted to check and see how class of 2030 is being advised re: housing.

This is what the FAQ says, though I thought I read elsewhere on the site that it’s a 2-year guarantee.

First-year fall-term students admitted through the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid are guaranteed on-campus housing. This guarantee is good for three consecutive years if a student meets housing application and deposit deadlines in subsequent years.

Edit: that notwithstanding, a later FAQ notes that waitlisted students are not guaranteed housing.

We are going to an admitted student event on 11/1. I will ask about housing and report back

I saw an article saying that Pitt was housing incoming students in hotels because of increased enrollment. If you Google it, you’ll see various news stories and Reddit threads with people complaining about this situation.

It’s a little nervous-making, to be sure.

On the other hand, they are still guaranteeing housing, which is pretty high on our list of priorities at least for freshman year (not just to avoid a stressful housing application process but because you know you don’t have to worry about food, internet, utilities, who to call when something goes wrong, etc)

Yeah, that’s a fair point.

I lived off-campus my first year at a large state university (by choice), and it’s always been on the list of things I should have done differently!

Yes, and the article says guaranteed for 3 yrs, which is more than the vast majority of (flagship/larger) state schools I’ve seen.

On a nursing admissions Facebook page I follow, there have been a couple of kids asked for mid-year grades and some given admission to other campuses.

I read the same article about them putting students in hotels. I have mixed feelings, but I think my daughter would love to be put up in a hotel. I’d hate to be an actual guest at any hotel that a bunch of college students are staying in though. I know they put them only on specific floors but still.

RIT actually does, too – but it’s a choice students have, whether to stay in a residence hall or at the RIT Inn. Well, when we flew in to tour, we stayed at the RIT Inn, and we were so confused about all the student-age kids hanging out in the lobby – we surmised maybe they were there for a conference or something?

But no, lol, those were RIT kids opting to live there. (It isn’t walkable from campus, but there is a shuttle.)

A bunch of the Boston schools do it too. The hotel BU had students in the past few years was a pretty upscale one too. Wouldn’t be annoyed for my child to be staying there rather than dorms.

Lots of schools do this when they have unexpected high yield or other issues with housing availability. It’s certainly a lot quicker and more flexible than building new dorms! One might interpret this as a positive sign, if the increased enrollment is due to the university becoming more attractive to students. On the other hand, increased enrollment leading to overflow housing would imply some level of crowding for other facilities at the school as well (unless other facilities are also being expanded at the same time). Something to consider for every school, I think.

I know of. a kid at our school who was not accepted yet; they asked for first semester grades and then they will reevaluate.

May I ask the exact name of the Facebook group?

Yes! A few of my daughter’s friends ended up in the Hampton Inn. The record # of enrollment this year had kids assigned to the hotel, as well as forced triples; lounges converted to dorms and upperclassman dorms used for freshman to accommodate a class of their size. (I think 5,870 students) The hotel accommodations actually seem quite nice, although a much further walk from the center of lower campus. My daughter and roommate did not get any of their 3 requested dorm choices AND we’re placed in a 2 bedroom / 5 girl suite with an unknown roommate within their triple so Pitt housing most definitely had to creative this year to find a space for everyone!

C26 accepted to Dietrich (architecture). Applied 10/5 with application complete 10/9. Divergent stats made this an uncertain application - but putting them here to show not everyone on CC has great everything lol - GPA ~3.4 (poor freshman year, reasons explained) but strong upward trend (~3.8 junior year), NM commended, SAT 1500, ECs average.
