University of South Carolina Early Action for Fall 2024

Hi, has anyone else heard from Top Scholars this week - either an invitation or a “no”? Thanks!

Not here. They said that everyone would hear by the end of the month.

Hmm, OK. We are in MA and he requested it right when he was accepted. Hopefully just randomly sending. Not the end of the world but he was excited for his free swag :joy:

Hello. I have a son who has applied for this year, and my daughter is currently a sophomore in Darla Moore and a part of Honors. We are OOS (Kentucky)

RE Darla Moore: Yes, it is one of the most challenging colleges. For the most competitive programs (ie-International Business), your major is listed as pre for the first year. If you are in the honors college and you meet the grade requirements, you are given an automatic admit to the program and your major changes in your sophomore year (no longer pre). Otherwise, they admit students to the program after the first year - but I am not sure how many or how that process works.

I am not sure what specific courses they require in advance, but I know they look at HS rigor when determining admittance to Business. I believe that both Calc and Stats are required courses to take during college for a business major. They were GREAT about accepting AP credit, which made my daughter’s registration process really positive.

We have nothing but glowing things to say about the University, Honors, and Darla Moore. Great experience so far!

I hope this was helpful - Good luck!

Very helpful. Many thanks! Congratulations and good luck to your daughter!

Darla Moore is def more competitive. My son did NOT have AP Calc–his last high school math was Pre-Calc and he was admitted (2022). He did just take Calc this past semester (1st semester sophomore year) and got an A!

What do guys typically wear at Accepted Students Day? I know general campus tours are super casual but are these days just as casual? Thanks!

Yes, pretty casual. My son is a sophomore and doing tours for HRSM-I assure you he would not notice what anyone was wearing unless they looked SUPER sloppy or overdressed. Or of course, were representing other SEC teams on their clothing. LOL

Thanks! I imagine wearing another school’s team would be a giant no no! Chuckling thinking about it!

Yeah, especially not advisable to wear Clemson gear for USC admitted student day…

My son just got his “you were not selected for Top Scholars” letter. So darn disappointing. 4.0UW, 5’s on every AP exam that he has taken. 1560 SAT in one sitting. Clearing being a top scholar is really not enough for Top Scholars.

I just received an email saying I was not selected for top scholar. So they should be sending those out around now

I wonder if there is a financial/need component to this? I know it’s not positioned that way but I wonder if those who are deemed able to pay are not selected in favor of students who need a free ride (and obviously are outstanding students). I also understand they only offer a spot to 45 OOS and likely want a diverse group from many geographic areas so at most, one kid per state.

There definitely may be a need-based piece to this. They have tons of repeat states in the pool in past years, so I don’t think that’s a huge factor. They spread it around by major and my kiddo has a popular major pick.

And honestly I’m most disappointed because my kiddo would really benefit from the small group and support in the door. He is an introvert and could use the extra welcome. Hopefully the Honors College will provide enough of that. It’s frustrating as it is a top choice for him and lots of comments from people who were selected about it not being their top choice. I know that several of the awards will not come to fruition as those kids go on to other schools. Just a bit disappointed.

We also just got the “not selected” top scholar email. Oh well. Would have made a much more compelling argument for my D. I really love SC but in the end, her choice. Will have to wait and see what she decides. May we all survive these next few months. LOL Good luck to everyone!!

Similar disappointment for my daughter :pensive:
3.96 UW
36 ACT
etc.

She has a very difficult decision to make as USC is her #1, but the COA at another (SEC) school is less than half of the best USC can offer as a non-TS. Even the lowest TS award would have closed the gap enough. Ugh.
