University of South Carolina Early Action for Fall 2024

Was your student already admitted the the Honors College? Did your daughter receive notification that she was being considered for TS? I am trying to keep up with multiple colleges and cannot remember. My DD has not received notification on Honors College or TS.

@stepfinch I hear you!!! Especially when USC (southern Calif) and USC (South Carolina) released top scholarship decisions on the same day.

Mine was accepted to OOS Honors at SoCarolina but not Top Scholars.

Yes, she was admitted to the Honors College in the December wave. There was no notification that she was being considered for the TS, but I think every student admitted to the Honors College is under consideration which I guess is why they send out the “not chosen” email to students who have received their Honors notifications already. It is my understanding that additional Honors College acceptances should be coming out in the next several weeks but I think the Top Scholars ship has sailed. Good luck!!

I am still anxiously waiting for an honors decision. Would anyone be willing to share stats of accepted students?

My D was borderline on her test score - 32 ACT but top 1% in class, 4.0 UW, 4 sport varsity athlete, team captain, several leadership positions, 2xstate champion, strong LORs. Accepted to HC 12/23. Best of luck!

Is a 32 ACT just in the middle range minimum? I have a 30, but assumed it should be ok since I read 32-34 is just the 50% range.

I am also OOS from MN. Wasn’t sure if that would help since I do not think many people from MN applied to HC

I would think location helps as geographical variety is a good thing. Not totally sure about test scores. This is my first kid going through this process. Wasn’t thinking in terms of the 50% so it could stand to reason, you still have a shot with a 30. Regardless of what happens, you should be super proud of your hard work. Hopefully you get good news here in the next few weeks!!

This is just anecdotal of course, but my kid and another kid from the same school both got TS, and neither my family nor the other kid’s qualifies for any financial aid, much less a full or mostly full ride.

Curious, were they invited this year and would you share stats? I think they would try to target kids that they feel really want to be there and that it’s not the students back up or safety
 Which makes sense

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I wouldn’t have expected out of 45 kids OOS invited, they’d choose 2 from the same school. Do you mind sharing what state you are in (and if there’s something specific about your school)? For example, we are in NJ and our daughter attends a magnet STEM high school where she had about 19 kids in her academy year (one of her friends did not get into Honors, at least not yet).

We’re actually in-state, but I doubt they’re using need-based qualifications for OOS kids but not for IS. That kind of distinction seems problematic.

My older one (son) is similar. He wasn’t really interested in large state schools because he thought he’d get lost in the shuffle (other than TN, where he had friends who were committed to attending). Practically, he’s at a moderate sized LAC a couple hours away where he knew no one as a freshman, and now thriving after dealing with some anxiety initially (now a sophomore). I would think/hope Honors would provide the extra welcome, but maybe consider some smaller schools for the extra support.

Is the December HC wave smaller than the wave in Feburary?

I don’t believe that they publish how many kids are admitted in December vs February. December cohort seems to be fairly small from what I have seen online.

I believe more kids are selected from in-state for TS than OOS (though not that many) so may explain why multiple kids/same school were selected. At the end of the day, schools have all sorts of predictive data of who will come/who will not based on past years/stats/demographics, so trying to figure it out is next to impossible.

We are attending a SCHC reception this Friday prior to admitted students day on Saturday. Our DD is in state and was not selected for TS. Hopefully there will be many other HC students there as this event lasts 1 1/2 hours.

Anyone else not get notification back yet from TS? I called admissions office today and they said all decisions would be sent out by 5pm est but nothing yet for me.

@chickenpotpie1 Did you check your spam folder?

Yes. I have been watching everything for the past week :frowning:
