Iām concerned about the housing situation. I know housing isnāt guaranteed for Freshman and that you need to jump on the housing application early to secure a spot. Iām more concerned about the cost of off campus housing. A girl from my school currently attends as a freshman and has been told she does not have on campus housing for next year. The apartment she has found within walking distance to campus is $5000 a month for a 3 bedroom. She has 2 other roommates so essentially $1,667 each. Does anyone know if that is the going rate for apartments near campus?? My sister has an amazing apartment in Conway, SC where she goes to Coastal Carolina. She has her own bedroom and bathroom, walk in closet, shared kitchen, living room, balcony, laundry in the apartment. There are pools, hammocks, grills, a dog run, and fire pits, and butlered garbage where they stick the can out in the hall between certain hours and it gets emptied and a new bag placed in it, wifi and cable is included. She pays $615 a month plus utilities which are about $25.
Yes, Iāve heard that rent is around $1,500 per month per person. This is one reason that my daughter will likely not be attending UTampa. She hasnāt made her final decision yet (still waiting on merit from other schools), but I told her that she needed to get way more that 12k to make Tampa a real option.
I got a full tuition scholarship to Stetson University so I most likely will be attending there, but I was still going through all of my options. I guess I was assuming that all college apartments in touristy areas like Tampa and Myrtle Beach would be close in price, but I guess I was way wrong lol
My oldest goes to Temple and her off campus rent is $700 per month (plus about $100 for utilities) and she has her own room and shares her bathroom with only 1 other girl (6 bedroom house). I researched Univ South Carolina and rent seems to range from $700 to $1,000. Penn State can range from $600 to as high as $1,800 (super new high rise in town), but at lease there is a wide range of options. Itās definitely something that has to be considered when looking at the whole picture for cost.
and congrats on the full tuition for Stetson! Thatās great
My daughter is a junior at Tampa and we pay $1400 per month for her off campus apt. She lives in a 3 BR with 2 other nursing majors, they each have their own bedroom with 2 baths, kitchen, in unit washer/dryer, and balcony. The complex has a lot of Tampa kids there. There is a gorgeous pool with grills for tenant use. 5 minutes from campus.
As for incoming freshman housing, yes it is important to send in the housing deposit/application as soon as possible. In 2021, my D sent hers in around now and the girl she planned to room with sent hers in a week later. My D got on campus housing and her potential roommate did not. FWIW.

Did your kid select Tampa over academically higher-ranked colleges? My kid loves Tampa and prefers it to several ābetterā schools. I am struggling with Tampaās lack of residential community (beyond freshman year) and ālowā graduation rate. If his other options were similarly ranked, I would be excited about Tampa for him. My kid loves the city of Tampa and the weather, and I āget itā but I am wrestling mightily with his decision. Did any of you overcome discomfort with the low graduation rate? Also, do you worry about job prospects for your kid outside of Florida?
I know of several Tampa graduates that have done very well for themselves, both in Florida and beyond. Having said that, I worry about all of these considerations for my own kid, so you are in good company. She chose the LSU Honors College over other much higher ranked schools and I have to admit Iām struggling with the decision. I know LSU has a good brand name but it is lower ranked per US News. I think Tampa has a solid regional reputation so I wouldnāt worry too much about it, but I know where you are coming from as I struggle with the same worries.
My son is graduating from UT this May. Yes the housing situation is real. He lives about 1/4 mile away from campus and his portion of the rent is $1515 plus he has to pay utilities and parking on top of that so in total it could be as much as $2000 a month.
Is anyone still waiting on RD? My D24 is still showing Awaiting Decision in the portal, she applied in mid-January. We thought they were supposed to release decisions by the end of March.
Yes! We are still waiting, but admittedly applied lateā¦Feb 24th I thinkā¦my dtr got an email on Friday saying they are running late on RD decisionsā¦annoying bc I called the day bf and said any day now!
The U Tampa admissions office is beyond unprofessional. Donāt expect them to stick to any date even if they say it and always expect them to be late.
Why are you still bashing UT when you are going to UF? Let it go, already.
Just trying to help people manage their expectations with UT admissions. Itās really bad and unprofessional on their part.
Curious is you heard? We were told that we would hear by March 31st, then any given Wednesday after that! Nothing yetā¦
No updates in D24 portal yet. She sent an email to the admissions office on Friday to see if she could get any updates or an ETA but they have not responded yet.
