University of Tennessee Class of 2029 Official RD Thread

This is the official discussion thread for University of Tennessee Class of 2029 RD applicants. Ask your questions and connect with fellow applicants.

My kid was deferred, and had applied to Haslam (Management as #1 and Marketing as #2), believing that they could try to focus on sports after they got a foundational business degree. So…they really want to do sports marketing and we’ve realized that you can get marketing and business classes in the College of Education, Health, & Human Sciences in the Department of Kinesiology. The College of Education has a higher acceptance rate, so it seems like a no brainer to switch the major, and get a minor in business admin. I have a few questions:

  1. Could it hurt my kid’s chances getting accepted in Regular Decision by contacting our admissions advisor and asking to switch the major? Does the act of asking put a ding by your name in the process? It may look like my kid is only doing it to get accepted, but my kid actually has sports marketing and sports comm and varsity sports all over their extracurriculars. It’s an honest passion and can be supported with facts.
  2. Has anyone here actually done this and how did it go?
  3. Any other thoughts or tips?
    Thanks!

Was the release of regular decisions tonight for in state planned or was that a surprise?

I am OOS - first I am hearing
I didn’t realize they did RD seperate for OOS and In state..

I saw the instagram post. Sounds like it was a surprise.

Anyone know when UTenn will tell admitted students if they won a merit scholarship?

OOS deferred from EA. Not to start “button gate” here but curious is anyone has an updated portal status that is blank. I believe it may have said deferred or awaiting decision previously (schools may be running together). March 4 cannot come soon enough.

Not sure. My OOS son was admitted to engineering EA.
Good luck to your student!!

I just checked and ours is blank as well. Unfortunately I have no idea if it has always been blank or if it changed recently.

Yes I believe it did say awaiting decision or submitted. Ours is blank as well.

OOS deferred EA. Portal status is blank, just has the link to the deferral letter on Dec. 17. So nervous because UTK is top choice and has been since my kid was a toddler (Knoxville is my hometown).

status is blank here as well

Does anyone know if you need to fill out FAFSA to receive merit scholarship? My dd filled out FAFSA two or three weeks ago and sent it to two schools just in case. Got a reply from one school within two days. Tennessee just send her an email that FAFSA is due in 3 days as if they never received it. I checked the FAFSA account and it definitely shows that it was sent to Tennessee-Knoxville. Not sure why she got the email. We only care about the merit she was awarded. I definitely don’t want her to lose that.

Daughter received merit with EA acceptance letter. OOS IL, Haslam Business school. Have not yet accepted offer and submitted FAFSA.

Our FAFSA was in in December and we still receive those emails. I think it is autogenerated. Merit also was included in child’s acceptance letter.

I do not think you have to do the FAFSA for merit. We did not, and will not do FAFSA, and we were told we did not have to but I am concerned and maybe I will do it just in case.

mine is blank as well

Last year looked like lots of talk about portal changes. Has anyone noticed anything different since they are supposed to release tomorrow?
