My son’s data and stuff is all there. I didn’t check earlier this morning, so no idea if it was ever briefly missing.
Stats:
OOS
35 ACT
UTK GPA is 4.63, 4.0 UW from our HS
He’ll have 11 AP credits if you count this year (but two are two-credit science lab classes, so 9 classes), so far on the five AP exams he’s taken he’s gotten three fives and two fours.
He’s an Eagle Scout.
He’s a two sport, four year varsity athlete, was team manager and co-captain junior year, is co-captain again this year.
He’s applied for construction science and management major (in the Ag School)
Oh, I meant UTK GPA. I’ll go fix that. I have no idea what his SRAR GPA is! I’m really hopeful for him, but our HS had a LOT of applicants to UTK this year (we are in VA, in a DC suburb) that were much higher stats than usual. I don’t know if the program he’s applied to is capped at UTK (I know it is at Clemson, where he also applied) but if it is that might be a ding against him and in favor of some other OOS student.
editing to add - I’m also a little scarred from my older son. When he was applying to Va Tech a few years ago (he’s a college junior now) he got waitlisted… even though his stats were well above the normal admittance stats from our county/school, even for engineering (what he applied for). The best guess we could make was that they were doing yield protection, thinking he didn’t really want to go there. Who knows, maybe. And, ultimately, it wasn’t the right school for him anyway, way bigger than what he ultimately wanted. But for this kid, my S25, he really wants a big school. In the general geographic region he wants only Clemson, VT, and UTK have the major he wants so he’s applied to all three and is crossing all there is to cross that, come spring time and decision time, he has some choices.
Only speaking from my own experience with my D23 (a Soph at UTK) and my S25 (VT is his first choice) - these SEC EA decisions are really just stats driven and way less about any sort of yield protection. Thats why they are so upfront about the merit $$ as well. VT is way more holistic and they want OOS kids so your S may have been double dinged.
I think remember you from the forums last year. Where did you child end up? Are they happy? I have one more year to go for my child so I continue to poke around and read these forums.
Ours is still missing. TN is his top choice, but really not sure what anything means at this point. He was deferred at Clemson where his sister goes, into four other schools so far, so we shall see. Major is International Politics, doing Army ROTC, had JROTC, two varsity sports, community service club in high school. GPA is just ok at 3.6 according to their scoring, but several AP classes and community college classes.
DS had changes to portal this morning. But has since returned to same as it was before. Everything there. I would say he is a relatively high stats kid.
I did notice that the difference in the portal may be how you logged in. Earlier this morning I logged in and everything was there as usual, but when everyone starting talking about things missing, I went in to check. I opened the Google window which was on the UTK portal page, but it had timed out, but had a big button that said login. When I clicked it and logged in, all the info was missing. I then actually closed down the window, and opened up a fresh one, went to the portal and logged in again. Everything was back to the original “everything is there, no changes” status. So maybe if the page timed out that might have something to do with it??
I don’t mean this to come off as sour grapes at all but I was just contemplating this - am I delusional or am I right in thinking that a degree from say Alabama is not going to really be worse than one from TN or really most other SEC schools in terms of ultimate job prospects? I know that not all of these schools are the same but it seems to me at least superficially that a lot of them are much more similar to one another than they are different. And that in five years admissions to a place like Alabama might be just as competitive.
So all this hysteria (myself included) and for what really?!
