Yes of course. Stand by.
Hello, current NMF Freshman at TU wanting to give my perspective.
I’ve had a blast at TU so far. There are campus events hosted all the time, athletic events, and just opportunities to hang out with other people. Plus, their NMSF scholarship is awesome; it is super nice having college completely paid for and $3000 deposited into my bank account within the first two weeks of each semester. The campus is also beautiful.
There are definitely places here you can find community, just not as many compared to state schools. Living on campus helps you meet new people pretty quickly and easily. People also can find community through Greek Life, but joining a frat/sorority is not essential to feeling like you belong here. You could also find community through a campus ministry like RUF, BCM, or the Newman Center, athletics, the band, being a University Ambassador (please let me be a UA Brad), or through a club like MADE. There’s a lot more clubs on campus, those are just the ones I have found where there is the strongest community.
Overall, I have loved my time at TU so far, and I am looking forward to the next 3.5 years. Please reach out if you have any questions!
“Tulsa Time” on 2/18-19 is the best time for your daughter to come! Let me know if you need more details. You can DM me.
And here’s a link. Tulsa Time Visit Program
Do most students have a car? If you don’t, is it easy to get around to stores?
Glad you are enjoying it!
We can’t make it to Future TU Scholars Day or Tulsa Time or other planned events, but my daughter and I will be on campus in early Feb for a regular visit (I assume it will hit the same key highlights). I’ve been to many colleges and universities across the nation for work during my career, but this will be my first time at TU (and first time in Tulsa). We have an extra day to explore before flying home. Any good local tips and destinations would be appreciated.
Great. First, come by my office, as I’d love to talk to your daughter. In Tulsa, there’s a lot to do. You can go to the Dylan Museum, Philbrook Museum; we’ll get you a great tour of campus. Let me know what fields might interest your daughter and I’ll hook up a couple faculty member to talk with her too!
We visited in October and enjoyed walking around the Gathering Place. We also went to the Sewing Machine museum, which was pretty fantastic, but it has to be your thing :).
Thank you! I would say about 2/3 of students have a car on campus. There is a Reasor’s, Target, and Walmart which are about a 8 min drive from campus. Having a car can be convenient if you need to go to a store or just explore everything Tulsa has to offer, but not having a car is not a big deal.
Since first years are required to have a meal plan if they live on campus, you can meet most of your needs on campus. Through the dining hall, student union, and the Hurricane Market (which has more than just food, ex: shampoo, soap, paper towels, detergent, basic medicine, ziplock bags) most of one’s needs can be met pretty easily with a trip to target just once or twice a semester.
How has your experience been with the dorms? My son would like a private room, but still have a place to meet people.
I have had a great experience with the dorms so far! I am living in Hardesty this year, which has helped me meet more people. The rooms in Hardesty are really nice, and you can tell the building is newer. There are usually people hanging out in one of the lobbies or the kitchen, which makes it easy to strike up a conversation with someone new.
Outside of Hardesty, the all-male dorm is John Mabee. While I do not think the John has as much community, there are still ways to meet more people. Plus, the rooms in the John are pretty spacious, which can come in handy if you are planning on bringing a lot of stuff.
Hi, Really sorry hate to be that guy, everywhere I read has UTulsa listed as R2. Nonetheless, It seems like a super cool school, and one I have on my list as I start my college search.
Yeah, it’s ok. As I said in the post, we have great ambitions. Our stated plan is to be R1 - hence, our outsized ambition - by 2027. We are R2 right now.
Ah, I see how I misread that. Thanks for clarifying!
Any idea how many students are from out-of-state?
80% plus.
In case anyone here is planning to audition for a music program or scholarship, the scholarship website has a typo. It says it’s due March 15, but it’s really due today! My daughter emailed with a question and found that out just this morning. Yikes. The director extended it to March 6 for her, which is appreciated. I guess I know what she is working on this weekend!
What are the requirements to keep the National Merit Scholarship each year after it is awarded? We toured the campus a cpl weeks ago and were very impressed.
You need to maintain good academic standing. That’s a vague standard, I understand, but it is a generous one.
Thank you. Is there a GPA associated with that?
