University of Tulsa Class of 2028 Official Discussion Thread

I make the decisions myself, with understanding and grace. But you should keep a 3.0 or above.

@PresCarsonTulsa I wanted to thank you for all the help you’ve give and all the questions you’ve answered. It’s been very helpful having you as a source of information! Unfortunately it looks like we have to take U of Tulsa off the list, as she didn’t receive the scholarships needed to make it work.

@PresCarsonTulsa in an earlier post you mentioned providing a list of engineering activities/student clubs, but I did not see a follow up post with the list. We are specifically interested in whether Tulsa has an active robotics club and or a competitive programming team that competes in contests like ICPC. We have not received clear answers on this topic from admissions counselor. Thanks!

@PresCarsonTulsa My daughter is trying to make her final choice with some very good options on the table. Tulsa is one of them, of course. With that being said, she is very active in her high school theater and has been trying to find information on what plays/musicals Tulsa has put on this year. She can only find stuff from 2022. Can you tell us more about the theater program at Tulsa and how involved students can get if they’re not actually theater majors? Thanks!

I believe the theatre program was cut a few years ago, but I hope I am wrong. I  theatre kids!!!

Indeed we do have a number of competitive learning clubs. A few opportunities are listed below:

  1. programming - our ACM chapter fields teams for ICPC every year.

  2. Root66 - our cybersecurity program competes in CCDC, CPTC, Hivestorm and multiple CTFs.

  3. AI- the new AI/ML club competes in AI contests

  4. Data Science - this coming year we will launch a students organization that will compete in DS competitions

  5. Robotics - our faculty and students mentor HS students in the FIRST competition.

We don’t have a theater major, alas. We have a new and very active theater club, which is student-run, though. They are just getting started up, so I haven’t seen any productions yet.

Oh, so your University doesn’t put on any musicals or plays? That’s too bad. I feel like so much is lost when a school doesn’t prioritize the arts.

We do prioritize the arts. We have major novelists, translators, musicians, etc. Several faculty are on this year’s National Book Critics list (the only university with more than one faculty member), etc. We have remarkable arts programs. But as a small university, we don’t have a formal theater program.

Has the school decided whether they will continue the National Merit Semifinalist scholarship package for the 2025 high school graduates?

I don’t have an answer to your question, but it would seem likely. I believe Tulsa is a good fit for the applicants who don’t get into Rice, Wash U or UT Austin, and many of them get the National Merit $ or another scholarship. Also, most of the flagship public schools within 6 hours of Tulsa (not counting UT or Tx A&M) are not as highly rated as the ones north and east, so that helps Tulsa recruit strong students as well.

I am seeing an updated 2025 National Merit Semifinalist package on the U Tulsa website and it looks to be mostly the same as previous years (100% covered tuition, fees, books, and Tier 1 housing & Tier 2 dining), except I do not see the additional $6,000 annual stipen. Remains quite generous.
