University of Virginia Early Action/Early Decision Class of 2030 Official Thread

We don’t admit to major with two, small exceptions (Nursing and Kinesiology). The Nursing applicants have to write a “why nursing” essay but that’s still not a “why UVA” question. If we wanted people to write that essay, we’d ask for it. Even in the days when we had extra essays, we never asked that. We know UVA and the opportunities it provides.

I saw a tiktok influencer say we want essays about majors, but they have never worked in our office and it’s safe to say they’ve never spoken to a UVA admission officer. The variety of topics, tone, and style in the essays we get is wonderful. Let the students go in whatever direction feels right to them.

Thank you! That is very helpful!

My S just submitted by the EA deadline and so the waiting begins! Good luck to all applicants!

Does anyone know if UVA requires 1st quarter grades from students applying early (either ED or EA)? My daughter couldn’t find the info on the UVA admissions website and I just looked and neither can I. Her school doesn’t technically give quarter grades, but they will issue a “grade in progress” for seniors if the school they are applying to requires it.

They do not require them but you can submit them on the portal if you want to.

Looks like 50/50 to me. In state helps. I would bet on a deferral to RD (I think uva does that.)

Thanks for the feedback. I share a similar assessment. I do not believe that UVA defers anymore so either Admit, Waitlist or Denial. Ugh. So stressful. It’s going to be a loooong two months.

The outcomes for each round are in the “Early Decision vs Early Action vs Regular Decision” section of the instructions. We defer during the early rounds. We use a waiting list at the end of the regular round.

You may be thinking of 2023, the one year we didn’t defer.

lol I had to reply to you, I literally just created an entirely new account to do so.

I am a current first year in the ASchool right now so I can tell you all about my experience and the most recent experience of college admission exclusive to the ASchool.

We have approx 90-100 students that are in the first year class together. We take all the same courses as we declare which one of three pathways we want at the end of our first year.

I believe more were accepted (~256 out of I want to say 1200?) applicants.

They do not have any portfolio submissions and last year they decided acceptances based off of the UVA and common app essay alone — but taking into account the disbandment of the UVA sup. Essay I want to say they will look closer at the common app one and test scores.

The ASchool is competitive, although no portfolio was required, most people here have a sophisticated and talented background in art.

Most people applied and got in EA aswell as ED (but that’s less common than EA).

EA is the most applied round so the fact she went ED means she’s committed to UVA which is a good look.

For reference I got in the most selective round (Regular Decision OOS) and have yet to meet anyone that did the same. But I will say UVA workload is not easy, it’s a significant increase than highschool and more than most majors except for premed.

But it’s a lot of fun and although courses are structured and concrete (meaning you don’t get as much freedom to take what you want) Prof. Iliescu (Sanda) is a blast to have and will make you think in ways you never imagined in ARCH 1020.

Plewse reach out and let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I would be more than happy to respond. As I have a couple tidbits about the social community here especially in the ASchool (it’s pretty clicky and small which has its negatives and positives ex. Gossip).

But best of luck to your daughter and I really hope she gets in!

One more thing (it’s about 12% oos acceptance) and when you get accepted it’s a straight shot into the ASchool which I believe it’s more selective than COAS, but it’s about 16% online for ASchool but I’m not sure if that’s after the people that got accepted into UVA.

Thank you for taking time to come on this forum and address questions! Very kind given that you must be incredibly busy right now. I was thinking that 2023 was the new normal for UVA as far as deferrals. Good to have the correct information.

Applied ED to UVA school of engineering. OOS student with a 4.0 UW GPA and 4.4 W GPA. 1510 SAT (550 English, 560 Math). 16 AP courses total with 4’s on two exams and 5’s on 7 of the exams I have taken. Taking 7 this year including Calc BC, Physics C: Mech and APCSA. Ranked 2/330 in class at a rural high school. I’ve been on my schools varsity swim team for 4 years, lead my MESA (A stem/engineering club) group that has been on the podium at states twice, president of psychology club, member of Mu Alpha Theta, SNHS, and NHS and volunteer tutoring Calc AB students weekly. I have a couple other EC’s but they aren’t anything special. Is it unrealistic for me to hope to get in or at least get deferred?

Good luck to you! Great stats! It’s becoming nearly impossible to predict how one will do in the ED round. You clearly are showing you are taking the most rigorous courses available to you which is important to UVA. Do you know of anyone else in your HS applying to UVA? For your SAT, do you mean 750 for RW, 760 for Math?
