We got this
I have to say, it is so lovely how well they communicate with applicants re expectations and how decisions are released, especially compared to other similar schools ….
Well done! A departure from how other schools have handled things!
Thoughts on what criteria matters most to UVA. Looking at past data from my son’s school (OOS), it looks like they cared most about gpa with test scores a close second. ECs are tough bc they don’t ask for a resume and don’t have supplementals. Obviously there is the common app essay. Just wondering what this cycle will look like. It’s always unpredictable with schools that have a low admissions rate.
Dean J, an AO at UVa, has said many times the most important aspect of a student’s application is their transcript…so grades and rigor. Students should take all 4 core classes every year and as advanced as possible. And same with foreign language. My D25 is a first-year and she knows multiple students who went test optional, both in and out of state. For ECs they want to see that you’re doing something…so it shows you can balance school work with other things. My D26 was accepted at ND Mendoza and received a handwritten note from them saying they loved her descriptions of her community involvement…no resume, just the 150 characters on the common app. She didn’t do anything out of the ordinary. I also think in terms of the essay, they want it to sound authentic, not written by AI.
Perfect thank you. Helps calm the nerves as there is nothing we can do now. He seems to check those boxes but who knows what will happen. Totally agree about taking all five core classes all four years!! So important.
Good luck! OOS is so tough and possibly even harder this year because I imagine more students applied because of the lack of supplements. Dean J will probably post stats tomorrow for both in-state and OOS applicants on her Notes from Peabody blog. https://uvaapplication.blogspot.com/
Does anyone know any portal astrology or whatever for UVA?
Hi there! The portal changes are not tied to a certain decision.
Good luck tomorrow night!
I just want to thank you for your transparent and clear communication. You’re awesome.
I second this. Combined, my kids have applied to over 30 schools and this level of communication has been amazing and much appreciated.
and shockingly, this level of communication and clarity is the exception and not the norm!
Hi Dean J! Could you share the range of possible decisions for EA applicants? E.g., accepted, rejected, deferred to RD, straight to waitlist? Thank you!
She will post the info she has on her blog. Sometimes it comes out the day before decisions, sometimes the day of, and I think maybe once the day after.
Early Action is a non-binding and unrestrictive admission plan that may be an attractive option for those feel they can present a strong application without senior grades being reviewed. We aim to release decisions of admit, deny, or defer by February 15th. Students admitted through the Early Action admission plan will have until May 1 to reserve a spot by in the incoming class.

This!
By range I thought you meant a number range. Like how many in each category.
Dean J posted stats on Notes from Peabody. And holy cow did those OOS applications increase. Notes from Peabody: The UVA Application Process
