Accepted OOS (EA)
3.6 UW, mid rigor (7 AP’s), 35 ACT Superscore
Human biology major, large state
thanks for sharing your insights, a lot to ponder.
No problem. Good luck!
Forgot to add: Asian, income bracket typically doesn’t get much aid. Still hoping for a little bit from UVA though.
The admission process doesn’t stop to surprise me …
My daughter was rejected from UNC (no surprise), deferred to UMich and accepted to UVA, GT and Purdue. Congratulations on UMich - everybody I hear was deferred.
My classmates did much better at Mich than GT or UVA.
Any further info on timing for those honors/merit awards? I gather they’re modest in size, but will they be announced tomorrow?
Is anyone from EA able to share the text of the waitlist letter? If you could copy and paste it in, that’d be great!
There are two versions of the WL letter. The in-state one has the additional information about doing the year at UVA Wise.
If you have questions about the waiting list that aren’t covered by the website, feel free to ask here and I’ll do my best or, if you want to have a private conversation, call the office. There are staff members on call during business hours to help you.
Will the number of students offered waitlist and the number that accept be released at any point? Say mid May?
Thank you for always answering our questions. I’ve got a quick one! Do you have any idea about when admitted students days will be announced? Looking forward to visiting! Thanks!
Hi @UVADeanJ - Will UVA be extending the SIR date this year similar to what the UCs just announced? If yes, I would assume you would not start the waitlist process until that date?
The number changes constantly, so it’s hard to pinpoint a data on which you count. There are three rounds and the early round have until March 1 to put themselves on the WL. The RD group has until April 15th. People can remove themselves at any time.
The statisticians will so a big summary at the very end so they can fill out the CDS.
We’ll have a save the date announcement for open houses soon and registration in March. We’ll have both in-person and virtual programs.
I think the FAFSA-only schools are most likely having these conversations right now. While our financial aid team will need the FAFSA to finalize packages, they have the CSS Profile to start their work. They even gave the Early Decision students preliminary packages because they had the CSS Profile.
If there’s any change, we will definitely communicate with students through multiple channels.
Like all situations, it comes down to the student and what they make of it. My younger brother, an in-state resident in high school, did not get into UVa as a freshman. One of the few schools he was accepted to was VaTech. He did not do well there, and transferred to community college to fix his grades, which he did. He then transferred to UVa and graduated with an Econ degree. I think he didn’t get into McIntire as a transfer. He made the most of it, secured an analyst position at a now 1st tier investment bank. Then went into a finance related industry, which he ended up being a leader in the field (non-sales). Now he has a key role in the industry at the national level. From what he’s said, UVa undergrad has great name recognition in the business sector and a supportive alumni network. He doubts he’d be where he is in life if he’d finished at VT. But he graduated a long time ago so I don’t know the difference in employer recruiting today. So I think it also boils down to the student, their goals, and what they with the do with the opportunities they’ve been given regardless where they attend college. I would compare career placement stats at all applied schools. I’ve found the more vague the stats, the worse the placement. Companies recruited at xxx school is very different from companies who hired at xxx school. Pay (hopefully median base and bonus are separated out), and position title (you want analyst not sales positions) also help in reviewing placement quality. One can also search the college’s name (with and without job titles) in Linkedin to see careers and what types of positions graduates hold. Only caveat would be if a company your child is interested in doesn’t recruit at the school. Even if one does, there’s no guarantee that all students will get a job offer from that company. If a company doesn’t recruiter, then the student would have to create his/her own door which is tougher to do. This is where a strong alumni network becomes helpful.
The more I’m reading about student experiences, fit seems important. VT wasn’t a good fit for your brother, and UVA won’t be a good fit for others. No school is going to be the perfect fit either. My daughter would’ve done well no matter where she went because that’s just how she is. But I realize now that she didnt work her ass off in high school to go to what’s viewed as the “best school”. I remember she told me during the application process she had worked so hard in high school because she wanted to have choices on where she could go. And she certainly accomplished that. She has choices now and doesn’t need to settle.
Anyone get in Echols Scholar Program?
The scholar information will probably be posted in the portal by the end of next week.
Thank you
