Both UVA and VT have charged extra fees for engineering for years.
All the additional fees should be noted on their website regarding tuition and fees.
But aren’t Virginia Tech’s extra fees for engineering more like $2000 a year? Big difference from UVA’s $11,000. It looks like the instate cost for UVA engineering is now $45-50K (depending on how you count books, travel, etc)
UVA is more expensive than VT in general. All the UVA tuition and fees for all the departments(engineering,McIntire, Batten. etc.) are availabe in advance of applying or deciding to attend.
It’s always been somewhat more expensive, but I don’t recall it being $15-20K a year more expensive.
The question was if it’s common to charge more. I would say yes, but UVA is charging 25% more for engineering. (In-state). That seems excessive. And I wouldn’t guess that much is normal elsewhere.
VA Tech has additional fees for their business school in the 3rd and 4th year, but definitely not in the range of an additional $12,000. I’ve been searching UVA’s website to find if a business minor still is an additional $12,000, but am unable to find that.
Yes it is normal for public schools, not just UVA . In addition, some publics charge more if you come in with sophomore standing or if you take more than the typical course load.
I will note none of the top private Engineering schools or programs charge extra Engineering fees or charge for extra courses, but then again costs are usually high to begin with(82-86k per yr).
My daughter is in UVA’s engineering school and is getting a business minor as well. The Com school has not charged extra for the business minor… thus far!
Has anyone heard if we might be getting a preliminary financial aid package or if they are waiting to send them after the FASFA processes? I know a few of our schools have sent preliminary ones subject to change.
