University of Virginia Early Action/Early Decision for Fall 2024 Admissions

Congratulations! 100% Agree with all you said!

My daughter was waitlisted with nearly these same stats and instate. It’s incredibly disappointing.

Sorry to hear that. It’s incredibly disappointing. I hope they find another school to love!

Does UVA defer ED or just waitlist and reject? I didn’t apply, but every schools seems to have different deferral/waitlist strategies.

This year they changed it to accept, reject, waitlist. No deferrals

Just curious (kid not looking at UVA, but can be intimidating when seeing the extracurricular list with strong grades/curric). Does your daughter work 20 hrs a week AND play a varsity sport? mine doesn’t get home until 7 from school/varsity practice, then dinner/shower, homework starts at 8. Trying to understand how kids can fit 20 hours a week of work/volunteer on top of a varsity sport + homework unless they work 10 hours each Sat and Sun?

I have a junior so I’m also trying to understand how extracurrics are positioned. The common app with a simple hours/week and weeks per year is tough to figure out given some activities have very heavy periods of commitment and light periods - so averaging makes the commitment look light, or no credit for the lower level of dedication in the off-seasons.

Even with jobs - working 1-2 nights a week during the school year is a huge amount of dedication with sports, other activities, and homework (but if try to show the hours/week then need to bundle those all together and just say the commitment is fewer weeks per year which isn’t an accurate portrayal of how kids are juggling so much at the same time). In the summer, 20, 30 hours/week is very feasible (but still also a lot given how overscheduled kids can be - 40 is a fulltime job). Any insights would be appreciated!

My daughter is an EMT working for our local volunteer ambulance squad so she takes overnight shifts once a week (12 hours) and weekend shifts, during her sports season. Her HS is also 2 blocks from ambulance headquarters so she is able to take 7am-1pm shifts during school also, when she’s in season for her sport, and if she gets a call she can get to headquarters in a couple minutes - there is an agreement between our school and the volunteer squad where the school allows EMTs to “drop everything” and leave when they are on call, if they get a call as long as it doesn’t conflict with tests, and they are responsible for all missed work. This is the only way she’s about to make that commitment of 20 hours per week. Sometimes more/less. It’s her absolute favorite activity and what drove her to want to be a nurse (hence UVA nursing!).

I understand what you mean about averaging off season lighter schedule with in-season 18+ hours/week commitment for sports. My daughter listed her sport (softball) for the 18ish weeks in season hours/committment and put a short statement in the description about off-season time, if that makes sense. For school clubs, it also can appear light with the hours per week - I think admissions officers are well aware of all the things you mentioned and and that the time commitment is not as important as what they do during that time and their passion for those things.

Yes! Reject, accept or waitlist
This makes it so much easier. This whole new Grey area of "deferrals " is confusing and quite frankly I think its a cop out for not reviewing all applications in time. I know for a fact that some schools this week EA, seems like almost EVERYONE got deferred, entire High schools getting deferred. Very few accepted. Very few, if any rejections were given and I know a few that should have been flat out rejected
we will see.

Yes?

I applied EA OOS, should I send first quarter or first semester grades once they are available? My grades were good.

Thank you! Very helpful!

If you follow UVAdeanJ she has said you can upload first quarter grades in your portal if you would like to. I don’t think it can hurt.

Will the wait-listed from ED get a fresh review in EA and/or RD cycle?

I don’t believe so

UVA is not deferring ED applicants to later rounds. The 3 options are: Accept, Deny, Wait List.

Found this from UVA website which explains in detail how their waitlist works. Thanks, everyone. https://admission.virginia.edu/waitlist

Unfortunately, that doesn’t really give you an idea of how many people they’re actually going to place on the waiting list this year seeing that they’re not deferring people I feel like it’s very hard to gauge what’s going to happen this year
