Does legacy count a little bit at UVA?
Not anymore…and this is coming from a legacy Hoo had a child legacy as well. 3 generations of Hoos in my lineage

Have they gone full “holistic” then? What’s the differentiating factor if you are OOS with above threshold test scores and GPA? Essays?
Hi there, holistic review isn’t new to UVA. Sustained classroom performance (that is not found in a GPA or test score) is the most important factor, but we obviously look to the rest of the application to understand the bigger picture.

Applying EA, does UVA accept self-reported grades and when/where do they get reported (common app says UVA does not look at courses/grades from common app)? Or, does the high school have to send an official transcript? Thank you
Thanks for the link and information. With holistic review, how do we answer the question, what is the academic profile of first year admitted students?
(For context, I looked up the link below and see only SAT scores)
High school will need to submit official transcript. Here is what are listed in the common app:
- School Report Required
- Mid Year Report Required
- Final Report Required
- Teacher Evaluation(s): 1 Required, 1 Optional
- Other Evaluation(s): Not Applicable
It is still listed as a factor that is considered on the 2024 UVA common data set. My guess is that it would have more of an impact on an out-of-state application than an in state one. I do agree it is not as important now as it was a decade ago

Legacy admissions to Virginia universities are no more . Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed a bill on Friday that bans universities from giving preferential treatment to students whose family members have attended that university. The state bill was one of a handful that received bipartisan support.

You should start a chance me outside of this thread so you get responses. Also, before applying to UVA (or any US school) as an international, make sure they provide need-based aid to international students as many (the majority) do not.
They look at the application holistically. My S24 is a first year at UVA (applied EA) and we are OOS. He had 3.98UW/4.64W/1580 SAT but I saw kids with similar stats (OOS) be rejected last year. The admission rate is much lower for OOS kids (12%) and the competition is fierce as the majority of applicants are OOS.

In the common app for the UVA supplemental essay it says
In around 250 words, please answer the following question.
What about your individual background, perspective, or experience will serve as a source of strength for you or those around you at UVA?
But the box allows 300 words.
Is it risky to use 300 words? Will the last 50 words be chopped off when the essay is transferred to the portal?
Logical answer would if the common app allows 300 words it should be transferred as is. cannot find the prompt or the instructions on their website. maybe poor search skills.
My thinking is that “around 250” means either over or under, so you’ll be fine with anything up to the common app limit of 300. That supplemental seems important BTW…looking at last year’s thread people with perfect stats were getting denied so the main differentiating factor must be the essays.

No worries. They allow 300. My D25 put 298 words and submitted. No words are chopped off. Quite sure.
