Yes. 50th percentile is 1450. character and personal qualities through essays/activities seem to matter more than test scores.

Hello UVADeanJ. My son contacted the admissions office on Friday when he realized he had incorrectly indicated he was not going to submit test scores. My understanding is that he will get an email from UVA which will allow him to update the portal or is there something else he should do to meet the November 15 deadline of submitting scores? His scores are listed in his CommonApp. He just selected “no” to test score consideration in the UVA questions.
Question for the crowd. DD is a junior in VA. She scored a 1390 on the SAT (700 v / 690 m). She is interested in Engineering at UVA. To all of our complete shock and surprise (most of all her), she scored a 1500 on her PSAT with a perfect math score. She will most likely qualify for NMSF. She feels test anxiety taking the SAT that she did not feel taking the PSAT. She will try the SAT again, but in the case that she is not able to significantly improve her SAT score, would applying test optional be the smart move? If we include her PSAT results in the honors section, will UVA consider her PSAT score at all? Will a prefect PSAT math score be enough to convince UVA that she will be able to succeed in the Engineering math classes? She is taking Calc 1 as a Dual Enrollment class with VCU this year and will take Dual Enrollment Calc 2 next year as a senior. Thanks so much for reading and advice!
I’m not sitting in the admissions office but IMO if I see someone with a high PSAT score who applied test optional I would assume that they went test optional because their SAT score was too low.
There is good correlation between PSAT and SAT scores. I am pretty sure she will get a good SAT score in her next attempt.
Your stats are similar to my D24. OOS applied EA. She had a ~3.95 uwgpa, ~4.55 wgpa, was in the top 10% in her class (probably top 15-20/200), 8 APs, good ECs, and a couple leadership positions. She applied pre-Econ/McIntire. She was waitlisted but did get in. There were at least 57+ students taken off the waitlist for 2024. The number of waitlisted students who do get accepted, however, ranges dramatically. UVADeanJ posted this previously which is from UVA’s website: The number of students admitted from the waiting list can be quite different from year to year. Here are the numbers from the last few years…
Year | Students Admitted from the Waiting List |
---|---|
2023 | 360 |
2022 | 7 |
2021 | 83 |
2020 | 915 |
2019 | 9 |
2018 | 13 |
2017 | 117 |
Good luck!
When does uva early decision come out?
By Dec 15 per their website.
My guess is overnight Fri-Sat, 12/13-14.
There’s a chart on the admission instructions page that lays out the timeline. PLEASE be sure to read the application instructions. There’s important information there.
On the admission blog, just look at December posts for ED, January/February posts for EA, and March posts for RD. I started that blog in 2005 (hence the old URL), so there’s a significant history there. Just remember that volume drives the release date. We won’t rush the process to hit a certain date. We’ve notified on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays in the past.
While waiting you can read about UVA’s history of cancelling and reinstating ED. I found the reasoning in the article and comparison of ED to EA quite complicated to follow.
A public university offering ED is rare.
In Virginia, UVA, W&M, CNU, Longwood (Nursing), and VMI are the public colleges that have Early Decision. W&M has ED1 and ED2.
I don’t think there’s much that’s complex here. Administrations change and that tends to lead to policy changes.
No problem. Edited. It was just in reference to the article linked whose reasoning I found complex.
The blog says decisions will be out Friday around 5 pm. Good luck everyone!!
“My guess is overnight Fri-Sat, 12/13-14.”
I’ve just high-fived myself (I count Fri CoB as overnight Fri-Sat).
If the same amount of rigor is used to evaluate an EA and an ED candidate, then the only reason I can think that a student would pick ED is that December 15 is 2 months earlier than February 15. Otherwise, there’s not a tactical advantage and you give up hearing from a few other schools and merit opportunities. Am I missing something.
Also - love your videos with or without the filter.

Best wishes to all!
This is just for ED, right? Not EA?
Blog has the ED stats if interested. (1282/4971 = 25.8% acceptance)
