University of Washington Class of 2028 Official Thread

  • UW 3.98 Instate acceptance not direct into requested Foster but assigned general pre major.
  • Of possible APs/Honors at high school took most of them.
  • I don’t know how anyone can rate their ECs objectively as excellent or average or the essay.
  • Part-time job.

It is not easy to get into UW at all nevermind the capacity constrained majors. Anyone accepted deserved it and anyone waitlisted or rejected is more than worthy in almost every case. And there are a 100 great schools out there you’ll attend and love it.

Do they not look at the second choice major? On the rejection/waitlist email only Economics was listed which seemed strange. My son would happily major in Real Estate, but it seems that they don’t even consider the second choice.

Your student’s profile sounds strong. However UW does emphasize that they are holistic. They say in their admissions presentations that they reject students every year with a 4.0 GPA and rigor.

You may want to double check the application to make sure that there wasn’t some error, but it’s possible that it’s just a case of a holistic admission decision. He may also be admitted off the waitlist.

Does he have other good options?

Again I think this would be a longer answer and one schools leave a bit vague. I could see the Business / Econ / real estate applications being considered together as they relate and many of those kids may eventually apply to Foster. And that area of the school is likely quite constrained. Business especially.

He does have a bunch of leadership positions, volunteer work and awards but you might be right. He has been accepted everywhere else he applied, but wanted UW.

Personally I’d appeal that one if it’s where he wants to go. I’m sure it won’t be a fun process, but hopefully worth it in the end. Plenty of stories out there of successful appeals, but no idea on the specific odds other than they say it’s unlikely.

business and econ

Should would be considered for her 2nd major she listed on her app.

Last year I know a dozen or more students who were waitlisted (OOS high school who typically get alot of students admitted to UW) and later on in April and May all accepted into their 2nd major listed (all applied to direct admit majors business, etc as first choice).

It was like they didn’t even look at their 2nd listed major before waitlisting them and then gave the waitlisted kids a second look at and admitted every single one of them for 2nd major.

Just know if waitlisted with a direct admit major as first choice, CS, Business, etc chances are unlikely they will be admitted for it.

I can’t understand why in-state kids were rejected/waitlisted while OOS kids with objectively inferior stats were direct admitted to the very same major. This institution appears to discriminate against the kids of the taxpayers who fund it.

Which major if you are ok sharing? Hang in there.

All big state schools rely on the smaller percentage of out-of-state kids to provide significant funding for their institutions, UW included. Average OOS tuition for schools like UW, Michigan, UT Austin, UCLA, Wisconsin etc etc. would net in the $40k range vs. in-state in the $11-14k range. It’s a funding issue. Big state flagships need out-of-state students until the funding mechanisms are changed.

It also gets complicated, but because the yield rate for out-of-state students so much lower they need accept many of them. This isn’t specific to UW. Only 10-20% of kids will attend (“yield”) an out-of-state school, while 50-70% of in-state kids will often attend their local flagship.

Your comments are spot on with the money side. We need to also recognize that objectively inferior stats isn’t true. Every school is different and the course load is different so trying to determine if someone’s 3.9 is better than someone’s 3.8 is not accurate or even possible by sheer comparison of one is higher than another. I think this is the most difficult part of I did not get admitted. Especially for UW which does not in any large way use test scores as a validator of GPA.

We look at my kid had a 3.95 and someone else reports a 3.86 and therefore I had the better application. That may not be true holistically and it very likely is not true on the GPA. You have done a really nice job on this thread IMO also noting that taking the APs within the high school is important not the raw quantity. This is a very emotional day for a lot of students and parents.

Completely agree. I’ve had kids go through it the past couple years and so many of their friends for four years now. I do my best not to speak out of turn, but know some details and personal stories… and I believe there are issues with the admissions process. The holistic can also be used as a crutch by universities at times. Fully agree it’s tough to evaluate any of this from a few posts though.

Hoping to keep it positive and constructive too!

Can understand the feelings everyone may be going through. My D22 is at Washington (OOS, CA). She applied to 9 colleges in CA a few years ago. Did not get into any. 5 waitlisted and nothing. Each college said in the letter…its not you, just looking for the right fit. Well, it’s hard to understand how none of the colleges were the right fit. 4.5 GPA (10+ AP classes (7 passed AP test, sports, EC’s, ect…) After the gut punch, University of Washington ended being a great option. So whatever happens, make the best of it. Also, for those thinking UDub is a good chance/safety school because of the admit rates (42% last year and 48% the year before), it’s a bit misleading because many kids applying are high stat kids. Lot’s of kids who are trying for other high end colleges, apply to UDub. It’s probably one of the toughest colleges in the world at a 40% admit rate. Keep positive everyone and things will work out

Did you see the video of the guy from admissions talking about this? They actually can’t admit more in state because the OOS pay a lot more in tuition which is needed for them to function at such a high level.

Joining the sad chorus of seemingly qualified in state kids. My daughter was waitlisted. In pre health. 4.0 unweighted, #1 of 351 in her school. 5 APs, 6 college in high school, varsity athlete all 4 years in 2 sports and team captain. Got in to Cal Poly SLO. Totally whack that she didn’t get into U.W.

That’s insane…I am sorry. We are heading to admitted students day at Cal Poly. I’m pretty sure it will be my first choice! Not sure about our daughter…

Does anyone know how competitive is the economics program at BU?

I think you may have posted this question in the wrong group…

My daughter has 2 track meets that overlap with the admitted student days at cal poly, so we are going the following week. It’s a great school, and her major there only has a 3.9% acceptance rate, so she was surprised she got in there and not U.W. But I think she’ll choose cal poly and be happy there.
