University of Washington Class of 2028 Waitlist

They should have a pretty good feel for how enrollment is trending at this point. If there isn’t a trickle off the list soon, it may be a lean waitlist year. Hoping not of course!

I hope we start seeing some movement soon. Need some closure either way.

The benefit of when the waitlist closes (which I’d expect to happen maybe early June to early July) is then waitlist applicants are eligible to appeal. We know of several successful appeals. Anecdotally, all had a 3.8+ and a reasonable number of APs. So, very solid academics. UW asks for your senior year grades, so if straight A’s have been maintained it’s likely helpful. The appeal letter will also need to provide additional or new information. Perhaps a better explanation of the weakest part of the original application. The details are linked here.

I just heard of a student that got off the waitlist this week

Any details on them? OOS/major?

I heard it second hand so am trying to confirm all the details, but the student was in state not 100% sure on major.

any news on recent waitlist movement as of now?

Hello, so if we were to get of the uw waitlist will we be only admitted to pre-sciences or could we be directly admitted to a major?

It’s discussed in the instructions for signing up for the waitlist. “Students on the waitlist are generally not considered for direct admission programs”. Exceptions may be possible, but probably not all that likely.

Not a lot of posts on this thread, but it does seem to be getting some views. So I’d guess many are still in that very frustrating waiting game and just waiting on any updates.

If anyone hears of reliable word of students being offered admissions from the UW waitlist please post it here, along with either in-state or out-of-state status. They are essentially two separate lists. Also, if an email is received indicating the waitlist has been closed for the year please post that as well.

I think we are all waiting until June 2+ because of the 6/1 extension

Yes when we opted in for waitlist they did say that we will hearing post June 1st.
But the SiR date being so late this year, my S24 has already committed to another university and is getting more invested there.

I’m waitlisted as an in-state applicant, are the in-state lists typically smaller than out of state? Is it harder to get off of because of the difference in yield?

This gets a little complicated to thoroughly explain in a reasonably short post, but essentially yes the big flagships tend to have a pretty good feel for the number of in-state applicants who will accept their offers. Also known as the “yield” rate. Out-of-state yields are much lower and tend to have more volatility, making them more challenging for universities to predict with precision. This is not a UW specific issue at all. Also, schools run into financial issues if they don’t have enough out-of-state students paying that higher tuition, so they have added motivation to ensure they get their target number one way or another.

Now that we’re past June 1st, any idea of when waitlist movement will start?

Haven’t heard a peep anywhere.

We may also just have a really small sample size here, so it’s hard to say. I’d suspect if there has been movement, much of it has already happened. They’d have a pretty clear indication of the acceptance trend by early May. Most students want to be done w/ it by then. Also, if we haven’t heard much I’d also expect it may be a light waitlist year. Just best guesses based on prior years. Eventually an email comes out indicating the waitlist is closed.

Anyone out there get off the UW waitlist at all??? This is crazy… I am so bummed for my daughter. this was her #1. OOS, 4.3, no SAT, great EC’s and essays, she declared engineering - can’t remember which two subsets
she selected.

I’m in the UW 2028 parents FB group and two people there said their kid got off the WL for engineering, both OOS and that was way back in April.

We are on the WL as well and have pretty much moved on, S24 is committed to another plan at this point.

GL!

At this point would there be a plausible reason for why UW is taking so long with the waitlist? Or can we expect it to just not happen at this point
