Unreliable study abroad LOR - next steps for a speedy application and approval?

Hello Parents Forum,

I’ve actually been reading the “this prof is infuriating!” post, and it’s given me a lot of insight and tips. However, I’d like to ask for some advice.

I’m in the midst of applying to a study abroad program, and I need 2 reference forms, at least 1 from an instructor and another from either another instructor or a an employer. My French professor (who I had this term and last term) already mailed it out, (I know hers will be top notch) but I’m lacking my other one and I need to get officially approved ASAP so I can work on my scheduling for next year. (The International Education coordinator leaves for Europe over the summer, so I have about a month left) Also, this is for next winter, so it’s not the end of the world if I have to wrap things up in the fall or over the summer. I’m just trying to stay on top of this. (there are tons of forms to fill out AFTER you get approved, so I could really use the summer to do that)

I’m not employed, so that’s not an option, and also, I’m only a freshman, so I don’t know any of my professors that well except for my French prof, who already sent one. I would ask my French teacher from high school, but she retired and she never did anything for me when I was in high school, and I asked another teacher and they never got back to me.

I do have a forming relationship with my writing professor, so could I take advantage of that? We’ve actually been talking about the possibility of her mentoring a research project of mine, and I know I’ll have her again since I’m also majoring in writing. (not that it helps me now)

In fact, she has office hours tomorrow and I was planning on going anyway, so should I just bring the form and the envelope and see what she says?

The program already has my transcript, my other prof’s form, and I’m working on my essays, the deposit money, and this next form. Am I being realistic in that I can get it all done by the end of this term? I’ve heard they always accept you, especially if you’re a foreign language major. The coordinator actually told me they really don’t reject people. It’s just the time element of getting everything in.

What should I do in this case? Thank you so much.

Go ask your instructor tomorrow. Chances are she has written LORs for people she has known even less well than she knows you. It is part and parcel of the whole college professor gig.

Good luck!

Yes, your writing teacher will be fine. Some study abroad programs are selective, but most most just want to make sure you aren’t going to cause problems.
