Unusually warm weather in certain parts of US

^^How long will she be in the east coast? Because there is no way we will get no winter. Less severe? Yes. None, not in the 30 years I’ve been in upstate NY.

Of course if my prayers FINALLY DO come true!!!

@morrismm not likely while she’s there, she returns after New Years. Naturally, we expect winter will hit Chicago right when she returns to school. But she was so looking forward to “Hearing the snow crunch…This is Santa’s big scene” as the Silver Bells song goes haha

It is snowing here in my neck of the woods north of Seattle!

The tornado damage scenes shown on TV were horrific. My thoughts are with everyone affected by the violent weather.

A woman took video from an airplane of the super cell which spawned the deadly tornadoes in the Dallas area. It’s pretty amazing.

^^ Yeah no, I get to see enough of those suckers in real life.

Well, she must be returning today then! It was really bad this afternoon!

@Nrdsb4 - I was paying attention to all the weather last night since I have a number of friends and relatives in the DFW area. I finally texted one of my friends who lives in Murphy to see if they’d had any damage. Ends up she’s in Maryland at her MIL’s home for the holidays, so she doesn’t know yet.

I did have one friend who lives in Dripping Springs outside of Austin, who posted a picture of the large tornado, that her BIL took - they were in Rowlett for Christmas, so saw this monstrosity… she was not happy about it! I also read a FB post from a high school friend who lives in Galveston, saying, “Aunt Em, Aunt Em.” So they got some wind there!

^^nope she’s still visiting the east coast, staying in NJ (near Philly I think) and doin Manhattan today. Returns to chitown prob next week. Hope the weather keeps because they are driving.

The nasty weather is supposed to be tonight. We are supposed to get a small amount of snow, sleet,M freezing rain, and then finally rain. I’m really hoping for mostly rain!

After temps,in the 60’s most of the month, today the highness bout 36. Brrr.

Texas has really been slammed this year. Remember those spring floods? They started with tornadoes too.

My son got out of DFW to return to MA, with snow coming.

Happy I’m in FL

We were staying in Ohio and drove up to Michigan today. I didn’t realize that the storm was hitting us. The governor closed down all government offices at 1:00 PM. (Which should’ve been my big flashing warning sign saying “STOP!”)

It was horrible. Took almost 9 hours to drive what should have been just over a 3 hour trip. We had to keep pulling off. It was ice and near-zero visibility for the vast majority of the trip.

I drove the whole way because Mr R and Mr R’s brother are not winter driving people. Which is fine by me because it’s my car and I’m a terrible backseat (and passenger seat) driver.

Made it home safe, luckily. The smart thing would’ve just been for us to get a hotel somewhere for the night but that thought didn’t occur to me until we were almost home.

Glad you’re safely home. Ice and winter driving is scary stuff!

Yeah, Texas has been slammed this year.

West Texas is under more than a foot of snow. Yes, they do typically get snow, but not like this. We own some property in west Texas. Hoping it hangs in there with all this crazy weather. Lots of areas experienced flooding. We were in the 30’s today in Dallas, with a bitter wind. Two days ago, it was 82 degrees.

D1 (4th year Ph.D student) and her SO flew back to North Carolina last night. Two hour delay, and they finally got out of here, basically in between severe thunderstorms. We had tons of rain, and I could have sworn I heard hail banging on our skylight. It might have been sleet, but it sounded “bigger” than that.

I’m glad everyone’s Texas friends are all okay. I have friends in Garland, but all seem to have dodged the bullet.

I saw video of the EF tornado that hit Garland and Rowlett. It was huge, but only visible when the lightning would strike. Those are so so scary, because they hit when it’s dark, and people can’t necessarily know they are driving right into the path or that it’s approaching their house. I don’t understand how all those storm chasers seem so confident that they are okay. It always seems like they are driving right towards the twisters.

Finally, I think sometimes people even ignore the sirens. We were hearing them loud and clear, almost as if they were right outside our house. But there were no tornadoes anywhere near us. It seems they go off on a county basis? If you are always hearing the sirens, yet you are not in any danger at all, it could set a precedent to never take them seriously.

Now I’m hearing about all kinds of mayhem in Missouri and the Southeast. Crazy times.

Thanks, HI. I’m usually very on top of the weather if I know I’m going to be driving, but this was just a whirlwind trip . We went down yesterday and came back today. It wasn’t supposed to drop 30+ degrees and change seasons overnight :frowning:

Well I just looked out on my deck and it is solid white. Not snow, but sleet and ice. 3 days before January and hello winter. And in the 20’s outside. What a change.

Suppose to be back in the mid to high 40’s next week. Something tells me ( the news actually) that this is going to be a very up and down winter. I’ll take the ups!

We flew into DFW Sunday morning and went to my sister’s in Flower Mound. Bad hail hit around 2:30, but luckily none of our cars were damaged. Our flight was diverted far south and took 30 minutes longer. I have relatives near the tornado site but all are ok. They said I30 traffic has been awful because of lookers and cleanup crews.

Looks like we got about an inch of snow here. One of the neat things is seeing the little animal footprints across the yard.

Last time I checked, no one really knows this season’s snow forecast for New England. We have to wait and see how El Nino really develops. But they do expect challenges in the upper midwest and cold in the south.

This year, we have a local young man who’ll clean out the driveway and sidewalk, using our snowblower. Anyone have an idea how much snow to come for? He said 2" but that seems light. We could walk and get the cars out in that. Otoh, if we ignore it, it could crust and be a hassle, later. How do you handle this? He’ll charge by the visit, not the whole season and his price is reasonable. Plus, he’s able to come at 6am.

Romani, Glad you made it home safely!

Ugh, I hope this blows over the kids will be driving back to Notre Dame from the east coast anyone know if a storms headed their way this weekend??
