UPenn Class of 2028 Official Thread

You will get your admission decision without a financial aid package or a minimum package if accepted you can then continue to turn in forms. Penn Fin Aid is working on aid packages right up until tuition is due.

I wish your daughter the best! My kid loves Penn and is super happy there.

I agree the wait was awful! It is almost over. And really they only have to get into one school that they can see themselves at being happy.

At our high school, kids definitely know who the top students are and adjust their application strategy accordingly. What I’ve learned from CC is this process happens more formally at private schools where guidance counselors help craft the college list.

There was already a bit of a scandal this cycle at our high school because a top student said he would not be applying REA but did and was accepted which left other students feeling like they “wasted” their early application. Using Naviance data, the college is unlikely to admit another student from our high school.

There is so much nuance to the college application process. It’s tough on teens and just exacerbates the toxic competitive culture of our high school.

To me it is becoming more apparent that the entire selection process is hit and miss. What is really need is a national certificate resulting from set exams at 12 grade ie a universal university entrance exam. How can there be justifiable comparisons when schools have different grading systems. This would also bring about a more equatable level of teaching across the country. No easy A’s. Students should be admitted on academic achievement not on who went to which school, had the most opportunity because of money or connections to programs not open to everyone or who have set up bogus companies (anyone can register a non profit).

We have this common university entrance exam in my country. I have gone through both types of college process: holistic (US) and exam based (my country). Believe me, exam based process is not at all a solution. Holistic admissions are way better. A single exam cannot decide your fate. And the competition here because of such exams is toxic. People only prepare for these exams for 2 to 4 years and have no social life.

And I am not complaining because of my performance in the exam . I scored good enough and can get into best universities here. (Also, good enough is literally measured on how much percent of people you scored more than; not how much marks you got in the exam!)

Some of my finaid documents had their status changed to March 23, although I submitted them much earlier. Does this mean they were just now processed in the portal?

It means that yes! It also means that someone at Penn pulled them into their system

I do understand where you are going with this. I also completely agree on a fair system. I think that a lot of kids who get disappointed in admission to these lottery schools have near perfect grades and test scores but lack the narrative these type of schools are looking for. I mean activities out of their schools telling an increasing story of an interest/goal in a field. Sure parents can buy experiences but that is not what I am talking about. It is an arch made by the student and their interest while balancing school work. This signals that the kid can balance class work and real world pursuits.

I am going to be unpopular here with my opinion but I do not think the kid has to tell others where he is applying. Now lying about it is another thing. Also if the package of one kid is going to affect your application so much than I think that was already not the right match of school to REA for you.

Can anyone recover their PennKey?

Probably, just being paranoid at this point

scared to try, did you? What did you get?
It asks for social security and all

yes, as always.

Yes, portal had pennid

I did try. Got this:

Pennkey Username Recovery Service

Sorry, there is a problem. This could be because:

  • The information you entered was incomplete or did not match Penn records.
(Alumni who are also active faculty, staff or students must provide PennID)

  • Your Penn affiliation does not permit you to recover your username.

It might work a day before decisions.
