Using the Search Function

I am finding the search function very wonky, and wonder if others have experience or advice. Some issues:

  1. Some colleges not coming up--e.g. I am looking for schools with a linguistics major in New England or "Mid East". I have put in all the right other filters. MIT and Brown, which both have linguistics majors, did not show up in the search results.
  2. I did a search and got 30-something results; a few minutes later, I did the same search, and got 16 results??

I’d like to know with some confidence that using the filters works. Does it? Or is the search hopelessly wonky and shouldn’t be trusted.
