@whatnames my brother is a freshmen at UT right now and he is same as you, civil major but wanted mechanical. It’s pretty hard to switch, you have to have a really good gpa, he unfortunately didn’t have it and they wouldn’t let him switch but he ended up liking civil more than he thought. But if you are really set on mechanical you have to work extra hard and stay focused !!
@lavenderlyfe77 would you happen to know your brothers GPA and if he took any AP credit freshman year?
@HYPSPlease cyka blyat! does it really make that much of a difference?
I always thought it was more like ‘ok so his counselor didn’t exactly love him but as long as there aren’t felony convictions to go along with that its not a deal breaker’
@vasilevsky I would not assume your rejection is due to your counselor recommendation. UT’s 39% acceptance rate is deceptive in that it includes auto-admits from Texas that comprise 75% of the class. Last year UT accepted a little over 15000 students out of nearly 40000 applicants. Assuming a similar yield between auto-admits and non auto-admits, 11,500 of those accepted were auto-admits. This implies an acceptance rate for non auto-admits of about 14%. If you check out other threads here you will find you are not alone in being rejected despite having outstanding qualifications. Given your stats I would expect you will receive better news in the future from you other college choices. Good luck.
@MisterPeabody, this is a good analysis. Thanks. But, two points:
- 11,500 auto-admits seems quite a large number! Have you seen any substantiation of it? Not challenging it, just curious and asking.
- Watching this forum and some of the statistics (especially of those who got declined) for the past few weeks, I’ve to say, the selection process does seem a bit erratic, or random. Any thoughts?
When it comes to non-auto admits the difference between being accepted or being declined can be razor thin. There is no way of predicting why they picked person one over person two when they have similar stats. I would suggest everyone accept whatever happens and move forward with your life. This will not be the first time in your life you did not get what you want. You will all go to great schools and your life will be what you make of it. It’s okay to grieve but just like a breaking up with a girl/boyfriend, you will be okay over time.
@vasilevsky do you… by any chance play CS:GO?
@vasilevsky @nyanpasu_ I do lol
@CollegeDadTX 1. No substantiation. This estimate was based on the assumption that the yield (47%) for auto-admits was the same for non auto-admits, thus the percentage of auto-admits of those accepted will approximately be equal to percentage of those that matriculate. I do not have any information that this actually the case, but it seems a reasonable assumption to base the calculation.
2. I think it seems especially erratic to us on the outside for because we have incomplete information. Objective academic stats are only part of the picture for non-auto admits. Also, UT admits by desired major. Some majors are very competitive (such as business), and stats that would be acceptable for one major are not good enough for another. So far as I know we do not have admission statistics for individual majors.
@nyanpasu_ hahahaha no but I know what you’re talking about
CS:GO is for loser Russians who get rejected from the mafia B-)
Hey y’all, I got accepted into physics yesterday! My plan right now is to pursue a Physics/Astronomy double major.

WTF UT
@MisterPeabody, thanks.
- I agree with the assuming similar %age of yield between auto-admits and the rest. But, I guess, I’m having tough time reconciling to your other assumption/assertion, viz., 75% of the class is auto-admits. Wondering, how you arrived at that.
- Agree with your view that we on the outside are necessarily dealing with incomplete facts and, hence, getting bewildered.
@heinhang UT does not superscore ACT’s. I am sorry you were denied. Good luck wherever you decide to go! There are many excellent universities.
For those of you trying to figure out the why’s of UT’s decisions, I don’t think you will ever arrive at an answer. There are many factors that go into their decisions. When you see someone list their ACT/SAT score, class rank, EC’s, you are not reading their rec letters or seeing their essays. You don’t know their whole story as it was presented in their application. You have to accept that you won’t ever know the why’s. There are so many great universities. No one should ever apply to just one. Now it’s time to choose where you will go and bloom where you’re planted! College is what YOU make of it. Good luck to everyone going forward from here!
@NotSoPatient – so true. Also, I wonder how much application date counts. I know students who applied to highly competitive majors literally the night before apps were due. There is just no excuse for that and it shows a clear lack of interest.
OTOH, I do also know students who applied super early and were CAPd or offered alternative majors. It’s a brutal admissions reality.
@CollegeDadTX – 75% is Texas state law. See https://admissions.utexas.edu/apply/decisions.
@bdiazrmz @TexasMom2017 @TheShortSon Were you offered CAP?
@gettingschooled Yes, DS was offered CAP. But for someone who wants to do CS, I don’t see how it’s any different from a flat rejection. If he wants to try to transfer in, seems like he would be better off going where he wants his freshman year, and then applying to transfer. My older son’s friend did this successfully from UTD. DS hasn’t made a decision yet, but right now, he’s pretty frustrated with UT, not particularly interested in transferring mid-career, and is thinking he’ll just go somewhere else. Makes me sad, but what can you do?
