Not familiar with UTA but UTSA is pretty great. Thirty thousand students now, growing like crazy with new buildings, a new football team, a great rec center. On a typical day, lots of students out on the plaza promoting their clubs and activities and just hanging out. There aren’t really on campus dorms, but there are more and more apartments close by that are full of students. San Antonio is a big city with lots of action, a big festival every month.
@tb2000 Despite UT being higher ranked (as you stated) and status as a flagship institution. Texas State has produced the only U.S. President from a Texas university. College rankings and “flagship” titles are social constructs built by elitists for elitists which is why I don’t take rankings seriously when determining the quality of a college and its student body.
@NuScholar If the only titles you’re paying attention to are the top, presidential ones, you’re completely missing out on the other important parts of a university. If you think so poorly of UT, then there’s really no reason for you to continue commenting negatively about it on a forum specifically designated for discussion about it. Elitism comes in many forms and very much not only at UT.
@tx6535 and @talkoftown…does that mean my D did not get in HSS? She has not received an email offer. Her honors tab says it is still in review.
Do they send admission decisions through email later or are they only updated on my status ? And if they email it has anyone received one yet saying congrats or something along those lines ?
@NuScholar --there is no doubt that users all over CC agree that any student can go to almost any school and work hard, take advantage of opportunities and create a successful life. Affordability is a huge factor that drives these choices.
With that said, no one in the state of Texas is going to agree with you that the opportunities and education provided at Texas State are identical to the University of Texas. It just isn’t true. Elitist or not–it’s just the way it is. UT has a powerful network and brand recognition and is well known.
I have a kid at Texas State and he is happy to be there. Having said this comparing Texas State to The University of Texas is a apple to orange comparison. UT has national recognition while most folks outside the Texas borders have no idea about Texas State. Texas State is a regional university and only geography and theater/dance degrees would be considered more highly than UT. UT is simply on another level.
Does anyone have any thoughts about the very restricted ability to change majors at UT? My son is lucky to have been admitted to the Moody College of Communications. He is also in TAMU in business. He has a full tuition scholarship at Alabama. His ASVFAB indicated that he would be talented in engineering, but he just took physics this year. He has not had calculus. He really has not idea what he wants to study or do. Is UT Austin the school for someone who is truly undecided?
@TrisTS59 I was admitted to JSG too! which major?
I think you have zeroed in on the most important criteria - fit for your son. From what I have heard, changing majors at UT is more difficult than TAMU - particularly getting into the business school. I attended TAMU myself and tried a few majors out. My daughter will attend UT this fall. I also work in HR for a top global company who recruits grads from both schools. Both are well respected and have great career services and alumni networks. It may be that your son needs to explore a bit to find his direction.
FYI, there is a great free online test that will give your son his “Meyers Briggs” personality type. Just do a google search on “free Jung typology” and the website that comes up is called humanmetrics. You don’t have to sign up for anything either to take it. After taking the assessment you get a four letter code. Type that into google followed by “careers” (ex. ENTP careers) and you get quite a bit of guidance to consider.
Good luck with his decision - you have some great options.
@onelasttime2021 – I’m not an expert, but I think he would find a lot of obstacles to transferring into engineering after being accepted into business.
He should call UT ASAP to discuss. It was our impression that it was next to impossible and most students were discouraged from doing this.
Does anyone know how difficult it is to get into ut’s nursing program as a CAP student? If I were to confirm my CAP offer, I would go to UT Arlington for my first year. Any info or advice would be much appreciated
Hey guys!! I was accepted to the Cockrell school of Engineering for Biomedical engineering major last Saturday. I’m a US citizen and an OOS applicant, residing outside the US. I wanted ask whether I will receive postal mail including an admit package from UT Austin.
Thanks!
@kassyD You will receive something. Normally within the US, it takes about a week.
@NuScholar YES LBJ attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College which is now Texas state- and a UT grad is currently the secretary of state- so what? You don’t have to pay attention to rank - The rest of the world is doing it for you. A Mccombs student with a B average will be hired and recruited by the best employers in the country when a Mccoy A student doesn’t even get an interview. These are the facts in the world we live in. it doesn’t make people elitist. it means they believe the UT student is more prepared to do the work they will be paying them to do- period. It’s fine to dislike the environment and to prefer a smaller less competitive place. It doesn’t mean that the people who choose the UT environment for the advantages it clearly provides in grad school admissions, business connections and employment opportunities makes them elitist or college snobs.
@tx6535 Thank you for that really thoughtful response. We spent some time on the phone today and confirmed that TAMU will only take a small handfull of internal transfers to engineering due to their new programs at TAMUG. Quite a few UT students on redditt think it is MUCH easier to externally transfer than transfer internally. It really does make me sad for all of these wonderful students who will not have the luxury of being able to go to college and try things out. I’m not bashing either of our state’s two Teir One Universities - just wish there was a bit of room for discovery! I think he will end up at ACC for a year trying to figure things out. Just HATE the idea of going thru the application process again! Thanks for your well wishes!
@mich17carat Hi! I know people who have been CAP that successfully transferred into UT Nursing. I’ve heard that its not that difficult to do as long as you maintain a HIGH GPA and grades.
For future reference, I would just like to say do not consider yourself safe at UT, NO MATTER WHAT. I am top 2% of my extremely competitive class ( I would be valedictorian at literally any other HS in the district), 33 ACT with a 34 on Math, leadership roles, state finalists in 6A football, academic all state and district, work and volunteer experience, legacy status, in state, an engineering internship, rec letter from the firm and superintendent of Pasadena ISD … the whole nine yards. However, I was denied from chemical engineering and mechanical engineering. Do not trust anything UT says- you will not be evaluated for your second choice major. Had I known this, I would have played it safe and put mechanical or civil as my first choice, since thought process the whole time was “If I don’t get chemical, I should definitely get mechanical”. This reasoning was confirmed by counselors at UT, yet I was told after the decisions were released that they did not evaluate any second choice majors. Additionally, UT’s “75%” rule is very misleading. A student can earn automatic admission, have highly qualified stats and personal achievements, dream of being a longhorn their whole life, only to have their acceptance to their major taken away from someone OOS who just applied to UT as a fallback, and could care less. The auto student is then given a list of absurd liberal arts major choices completely irrelevant to the major they applied for. To me, this should not count as “admission” to UT. I would place their real acceptance rate at around 25-30%, as I know many other students who did not get their major, so will be attending other universities, even though they were “accepted”.
Thank your lucky stars if you are a minority applying to UT. I watched dozens of non auto/ far less qualified than I minorities get accepted into engineering and other majors. I am sure the same is true for business. It’s not the students fault, that is just UT wanting to be as “diverse” as possible, and is losing very bright young men and women in the process
Finally, do not expect to get a real answer out of anyone on the phone at UT. When I called with serious question last weekend, I was given the same two or three different answers from the guy’s transcript he was handed.
Thanks to Affirmative Action, I will most likely be attending TAMU where I was accepted into honors engineering with generous scholarships, and they genuinely seem to care about my happiness and success. Your loss, UT.
Best of luck to everyone in the future… I’ll always wish I could have been a Longhorn.
Wow @cypatx33! I feel your pain. My son is in exactly same boat, his first choice eas chemical engineering too. And you are absolutely right. What was the point to even select the second major? UT is missing out big time!
I know you are angry and upset right now. But give few days and you will realize that UT actually did you a big favor. We already accepted the offer from TAMU this Monday for Engineering Honors and after doing a little bit of research, I can assure you, you will be looking back one day and will say that this is the best thing ever happened to you.
Feel free to pm me, I will put you in touch with my son if you wish, and make sure to register for New Students Conference from your portal as soon as you can. So many slots are taken already, and unfortunately the Honor students will not have the priority registration for this first fall semester, so register as soon as you can to get the best schedule.
@cypatx33 what questions were you trying to ask when calling UT? and what answers were you expecting?
