UT Austin Class of 2021 Thread

@cypatx33 My son was denied from Chemical Engineering , top 2%, AP Scholar, National Hispanic Scholar. Decisions are not based on race, otherwise he would have been admitted to Chemical Engineering at UT.

And to all the people who are going to give me affirmative action feedback, I had no affect on your engineering decision.

Wow! I can understand the frustration. I read somewhere that ChemE is rated #3 in the nation. This probably makes it ultra-competitive compared to other majors. Definitely something applicants should factor into their thinking. I do agree that asking for a second choice major and apparently not considering that does not seem to make sense.

I got my email last Friday.
Rejected: Environmental Science
SAT: (new) 1400
ACT: Composite 32
APs: 7
ECs: A LOT
Out of State

These things happen; I don’t know why they rejected me, considering UT’s high 39% acceptance rate, but I sure am glad to have gotten into more selective schools.

they are pretty sly with their rejection/acceptance. They emailed me informing me of a status change and told me to check my portal; took me a few seconds to realize I was rejected.

@gzuzumaki --sorry you got rejection, but super cool you have gotten into more selective schools! Which one besides Cal Poly?

The 39% acceptance rate is misleading because they are required to auto admit all in-state kids who are in the top 7%. Some of the specific schools have admission stats that are very low.

I’d rather not share the rest of that info for now, but I wish everyone else best of luck.

@gzuzumaki --ok, I understand. Looks like you were only active on the CalPoly thread. It would be interesting to see what more selective schools you were admitted to after being rejected from UT Austin and I’m sure it would be helpful to future students. You should come back and share!

I have read some of the comments and really feel for those who were not accepted. Since the only way to really know what tipped the balance would be to get feedback from the decisionmaker in a particular applicant’s case, which will never happen, implicitly casting aspersions as to why someone else got in is pure speculation and wasted energy, not to mention kind of poor etiquette. As others have said there are many paths to success and happiness in higher education and I know this to be true from personal experience many years ago. Use your talent and resourcefulness and turn it into a positive, your best years are definitely still to come!

Well said.

@gzuzumaki Sorry to hear you were not accepted. The 39 perent acceptance rate is deceiving. they accept around 19000 kids out of apx 50000 applicants. 75percent of these(14250) are done by the state’s auto- admit process which leaves 4750 to be accepted from the 31000. which makes the NON auto acceptance rate between 15-16 percent. Then another 15 percent of the total(2850) must be texas residents( meaning 90 percent of everyone accepted must be texas residents). That leaves 1900 people to be accepted from BOTH out of state and out of country. My numbers are estimates- maybe 49000 apply and they accept 20000- but my percentages are correct. I do not know what percentage of the total applicants are non texas residents but you are competing against that entire pool for a very small number of spots. A parent on this board said earlier this year that about 1/3 out of state applicants are accepted.- I have no idea if that is true or not. I know that the college of natural science is very competitive and probably more so now that UT has a medical school . Best of luck to you.

To everyone who was not accepted and has a negative attitude about it:

You are smart, you are valued, and you still have a world of opportunity.
Affirmative action and similar programs were not the cause, though, of your rejection.
You guys should take a moment to let it soak in and think about what you could have done differently, in case you find yourself in a position within the next four plus years where you’re trying to apply/transfer to UT. You can’t blame not getting in on things you can’t control like that. You really shouldn’t. For the big-name programs, too, realize that you can’t help not having near-perfect scores and a well rounded application-those things are in the past now.
Take a look at your essays and letters of rec (if available) and think about what you could have done to improve them. Don’t be angry at UT because they chose another student before you. They haven’t ruined your life. Most of those of you that are complaining are putting all of the blame on them and none on yourself. None of our applications were perfect.
And if you don’t want to do any of the above, don’t. You have to realize, though, that the world doesn’t work against you every time something bad/negative like this happens.

@nosyllaste --agreed, time for everyone to move on.

There were some high stat kids rejected for sure. But then there are others—who applied LATE (why oh why would you apply on the night before applications are due?? Do you think this shows interest to highly competitive majors? The answer is no it does not!) and still others who took an ACT test only once and were done–feeling over confident in their score which was just an average 50% for previously admitted years.

Agreed that it’s time to move on. If you think you can learn something by asking what you could’ve done differently, fine, but I wouldn’t recommend spending too much time there. Sometimes things are out of your control, and it’s better to move forward than obsess about the past.

Does anyone know of a GroupMe or group chat for class of 21?

@Deckem I know there are a ton already. I couldn’t provide you a link, but if you join the official facebook group, you will see many groupme group chats. I’m pretty sure there’s a general UT21 groupme as well as many specific ones for honors, LGBT people, etc.

I just got accepted into Engineering honors today and I’m really excited!

Congratulations!

How did you find out about honors acceptance?

@Sayani Congratulations! Which engineering major are you studying?
