UT Austin Class of 2025 — Regular Decision

For people who were admitted priority, have any of you not received your financial aid package yet?

Not yet…

Nope, still waiting.

Since I didn’t get into the honors program, and I mostly wanted to get into the honors program for FRI, I got an email today with the application for FRI and immediately applied. Does anyone have any perspective on how difficult it is to get into FRI as a non-honors student? Also used the application to apply to WINS, which I know requires you to live in Kinsolving I believe? Does anyone have any perspective on WINS?

If you take the virtual tour of UT on their website, when you get to the Norman Hackerman Building, it says, among other things, that it is home to the FRI, and about 900 freshman participate in the program. So if Deans/HSS/PS all participate, and people have said there are about 50 spots for each program, that gives you an idea about how many spots are left. Not everyone does it in thought - there is a YouTube post where the young man said he did not get in.

Thank you for this information! These numbers make me feel a bit better

I would definitely try and think your odds are good based on those numbers, if true.

Thx. They have only shared rooms available for fall now. The cheapest ( not cheap) singles are wait list only. GOing to tour castillian too. I want a happening dorm to meet people so I am hearing that it might be better to live at Callaway or Castillian.

Those are definitely both happening dorms. Callaway has not filled for each of the last two years, so even if they say they have a waitlist they also tend to go through it since kids who haven’t made a decision yet are holding those spots, a lot of kids who are appealing are also. If you put a deposit down as a waitlist person then you don’t lose your money if you don’t take it from what I recall, unlike those who are guaranteed a spot right now, so there’s no harm in putting your name on the WL. But double check that for sure before you give them your $450 or whatever it is.

oops

Madison is a very liberal town in an extremely conservative state. The city is beautiful and there is lots to do. The campus is very spread out along the lake on an isthmus but very walkable. It is not a diverse campus. It isn’t ranked as a top party school for nothing, State street is packed on the weekends and game days. School pride is huge as is Big 10 sports. It gets very cold and has snow from mid-October to beginning of April.

UT Austin is smack in the middle of town, I don’t have much positive to say about the area as we were extremely disappointed on our visit. The campus did not seem to be well kept up with COVID other than the stadium area.

We live in Galveston, my parents live in Madison. We know both areas well. It all depends on your major as they are both excellent schools. My daughter was accepted to both but will be going the A&M route instead.

This is a bit disappointing to read- I haven’t heard much negative about UT until this post. I know it’s much smaller than UW Madison., but expected to hear better reviews.

I visited. It was quiet for sure, but I didn’t sense it was unkept. I was not impressed with Guadalupe Street right by the school, but I got a good feel for the city for sure. I am really still vacilating about decision.

Everything else I really was impressed with and liked a lot. I also got to go on tour of callaway dorm and castillian. Callaway is much nicer. I am meeting with a professor on zoom next week to talk about program and answer some of my questions. I am impressed that I got a reply from a professor when I contacted.

Are there any students who have been accepted to either UT Austin or Georgia Tech, but not accepted to UIUC or Purdue or UW or PSU et al?

S21 accepted to UT Austin CS and Turing Scholar, Waitlisted UIUC. OOS for both.

Anyone receive their financial aid information from UT yet ?

nope

I keep checking the financial aid for any info/update- nada.

Guad is gross and the only thing in the main part really is the coop. Further north is Torchys and Kerby Lane. On weekends most kids do a lot of pregaming at frats or by the football stadium or bars on 6th street downtown which is where a lot of the action is. There are also a lot of activities on the water that people partake in and hiking that people do. Barton Springs is really nice. For shopping the Domain is where a lot go as well. Great food all over Austin. Campus is flat and not spread but also so much less dense feeling than Madison.
