They don’t waitlist.
Well I sure have been waitlisted, so I don’t know how valid your statement is
You’ve been waitlisted for UT or for an honors program? I have never heard of them waitlisting anyone other than for an honors program. What they usually do to offer someone a spot in lieu of having a waitlist, is offer admission to someone that has been capped. This is what they did last year.
If you’re saying you’ve been waitlisted then maybe this is something new they’re starting again and you should research it or make sure you’re not making a mistake in that you were admitted to a program and waitlisted for something else.]
Even this info from UT states they do not waitlist:
Types
Admit. Congratulations! You’ve been offered a place in the freshman class at The University of Texas at Austin and have been accepted to your requested major. You may submit your housing application and submit your enrollment deposit.
Deferral. Due to the competitiveness of the applicant pool and limited space in high demand programs, some applicants who meet the priority deadline may receive a defer decision by February 1. These applicants will continue to be considered for admission based on the competitiveness of the applicant pool, and pending space availability. Students will receive a final decision no later than March 1.
Denial. We regret that we are not able to offer admission at this time. Some applicants apply for transfer admission after beginning their studies elsewhere.
Note: Some Texas students who are not offered admission to UT Austin may be invited to be part of the Coordinated Admission Program (CAP) or Path to Admission through Co-Enrollment (PACE), in preparation for admission to the university for a future term.

I’m pretty confused as well. I’m an international student- I applied for CS and mech eng as my first and second choice majors respectively.
There was an error with their system, which incorrectly classified my application as ‘late’, and cancelled it on decisions day. I contacted them for an appeal later, and they said they would reconsider my application. A few days later, my MyStatus page changed to show the following:
"Your application for admission has been denied.
Thank you for your interest in The University of Texas at Austin. We regret that after a careful review of applications for the entering class, we are not able to offer you admission at this time.
Each year, the Office of Admissions faces the difficult task of selecting for admission a limited number of students from a pool of more than 47,000 extremely qualified applicants. Our decision is not a judgment of your academic achievement or potential, but rather a reflection of a very competitive applicant pool.
You will not receive a hard copy of this notice via postal mail.
You’re on the wait list.
Your application has been added to the wait list and is currently in review. Decisions regarding the wait list will be rendered by June 1. As soon as your decision is made, information about your next steps will be posted on this page."
I sent UT a follow up email as a LOCI and also asked about what exactly the waitlist was for. Haven’t received a reply yet, but hopefully they can shed some light on it
Add this to the list of head-scratchers this year!
UT did have waitlists this year. Some students who appealed were put on a waitlist. This isn’t something UT normally does. Then again, this isn’t a normal year.
I am in the EXACT same situation. I had to appeal because of some issue from their side and a few days later it said I had been placed on the waitlist. I was extremely confused because I never heard of the waitlist at UT, but I was told that after reviewing my appeal and my file the committee decided to put me on the waitlist and a very small number of people are in this situation. I really hope they admit us off the list.
I have been waitlisted for Dean’s scholar. Have been accepted otherwise to my choice major.

I would gather that because of their screw up in cancelling the applications which I wouldn’t be surprised if that was some sort of mistake by someone pushing a button or god only knows, that the only way to rectify it since decisions were already completed was to appease everyone and just put you all on waitlists. That June date is typically around the time also when transfers are notified.
Considering that orientation dates and sign up is already occurring and roommate matching is going on, I would consider any waitlist admission as a long shot and a pleasant surprise if it does happen and just start making plans to attend another university that you have been accepted to already. For my own child who is holding onto 3 waitlists we are already discussing this as well and while none of those schools were his top choices, I think he will not switch to any of them as there is no reason to but maybe just wants to have closure one way or the other but he is excited about his choice and is working on his housing, ordering his school gear, and looking at classes to take. Once you have committed somewhere it is very freeing and helps to close the book on other schools.
As for @confident2021 Good luck with the Deans Scholar as you await that decision. I think that is in CNS if I am correct. Honors programs have nice little perks but if you don’t get in, remember they are not everything. UT is awesome and if you’ve committed you will love it.
Thanks @srparent15 I am trying to decide between Rice and UT Austin. If they had given me Dean’s scholar at CNS then I would not debate it and straight go to UT. But oh well it is what it is. I should be able to make a decision in a couple of days. They will let me know about Dean’s scholar on April 20.
what are the reasons for which you prefer UT Austin over Rice?
Its just that it is the dream school for me. I guess the social scene, the dance team and over all the appeal of being in Austin.
Which dance team are you considering auditioning for? UT Pom Squad or UT Dance Team club , or another team? I was part of the UT Dance Team club (not sure what current name is) when I was student a long time ago. Back then the UT Pom Squad was all bleached blonde girls. Thankfully there’s more diversity nowadays! Just know that the dance teams can be quite selective, and they can base decisions as much on how you look as your actual dance technique. Don’t be too crushed if you don’t make the team after your first audition. Try out again. Even though UT is known for drawing in the brightest academic students, a large majority of students are also very talented in other areas. There will be excellent dancers at the auditions. Congrats on your univ. acceptances and good luck with Science-Dean’s Scholar.
Oh we know a bunch of girls on the dance team from our high school and my daughter’s sorority. Not my kids, no talent there.
Thanks for your words of wisdom. I am surely not a blond. I am into bollywood fusion dancing.
Awesome - I am not surprised that UT has that dance group. Sounds like fun. A number of years ago, I volunteered to review graduate school applications, and one of the prospective students (male) had listed Bollywood dance as one of his extracurricular activities at his undergrad college (not UT), so I figured Bollywood dance was already gaining popularity back then. Good luck with your decision.
Well Rice just sent me a letter of financial award that covers half of my tuition. So now I really have to make a decision.
Decision made. Rice it is!!
Congratulations on you decision. I didn’t want to make a suggestion since our priorities and goals may be different, but that’s what I would have chosen. Better school, better opportunities and they are showing you the love!
@TexasTiger2 Absolutely. It was the financial award that covers more than half the tuition and the presonalized welcome kit that did the trick. As parents we always thought she should pick Rice over UT Austin but we did not want to impose anything and left it to her. The resources and opportunities are surely better at Rice for a pre med. Thanks for your wishes.
