Yeah, An Essay That Worked

Nah, McCombs

I begin to think I was born in the wrong year.

I am working part time at Target. Few years back my stat would have received full ride plus stipend in a local college in Dallas (UT at Dallas), this COVID year I got nothing! Top 0.8% and 1580 with no aid at all! I basically cannot afford UTD so I have to turn to the cheaper UT Austin. But even auto admitted the major acceptance has been dragging for almost 4 months since early October! UT is so unorganized I have been bombarded with email and letters to apply for honors. What is the point of applying honors if I don’t get admitted to my major? And it is not like a checkbox in mystatus, I have to PAY the college board to submit every single AP scores (I took 9). And of course I haven’t paid for the $50 Housing deposit… everything is money money money. If I don’t get a dorm later you will see a barefoot guy living in a tent in front of the clock tower…

Ok I’m done ranting. Back to study…Good Night All!

Wow, didn’t really think abt what in-staters were feeling rn… Ig i’m lucky to be OOS bc I don’t have very high expectations. I’m also shocked you’re studying for things still…here in Mass we have the day off tomorrow (4 day weekend!). Good luck though!

^^ig I should clarify my school has the day off, I don’t think it’s a state-wide thing

Yeah and if you do get in UT then charges you to claim your AP credit! It’s nominal but the more hours you have to claim the more it costs you. Have never heard of any university doing that. The benefit besides filling a lot of gened and possible major requirements is it gives you a better spot for registration starting with second semester freshman year. But one thing to be aware of is that sometimes it doesn’t pay to claim all the credits because you may find no use for them. So no reason to claim all from the get go.

Wow. How much do they charge you? That’s nuts! At my OOS private school we pay the fee ourselves to take the exams. With 6 this year it’s $570! I am going to be mad paying more to get credit for what I already paid for! And yes Texas admissions process is the longest waiting game ever and very annoying.

@cpalm70 Our school too we had to pay $94 per AP Exam or whatever it was at the time. It’s a racket, even though it’s nominal. And, it’s not just for AP credit. It’s for dual credit and also for claiming credit like getting out of an English course for having a high enough ACT/SAT course. It’s only $10/hr but if you come in with close to 40 hours and are already paying OOS tuition, who wants to have another $400 tacked on. But again, that’s why it’s important to only claim what you truly need. I think we left 10 sitting there for Spanish that don’t fill any “box” needed because the electives were already filled with other courses, yay!

Here’s a link that shows the fees if you scroll down. It’s called “Petitioning for Credit” FAQs and Contact Information | UT Testing and Evaluation Services

Anything today?

if it comes today it’ll probably be around 5 pm CST, but some are saying it may not come till next week, so idk, this waiting game is the absolute worst lol

I agree about the rising population in Texas, but I feel that applications might be up at UT also because with the uncertainty of the pandemic, more students might want to be close to home (or their parents may want them to be). Although my daughter has applied to 4 east and west coast schools, I hope she stays in Texas…

I feel all your frustrations. I will say that my UT23 son didn’t put down his housing deposit until March or April (waiting on all decisions, etc) and he still ended up in the honors quad in what was probably his first choice dorm…I promise most things turn out okay.

Yes it is a pain. Last year $94 each AP Biology and Chemistry tests with only 2 free response questions. And we have to pay extra to report the scores to each school. College Board made it very difficult to cancel or request refund of AP tests. And of course UT Dean Honors have to report AP scores…The only thing I didn’t pay for was the SAT as I took it last year in Frisco SAT day in our school district.

At least you only need to send the reports once to colleges once you decide where you’re going. There’s no reason to send them otherwise. You should wait until after taking them Senior year and have them all sent one time. You then only pay one time.

As for the cost, yeah I know it is a high cost, but the benefit if you get the credit is nice. If not, it is. One of mine has a school that just doesn’t take certain courses in her major, APUSH, STATS, and some others. But took others so it was still worth it.

Canceling the tests last year (and this year) should be a school by school decision. I haven’t even paid for ours yet, and our high school has told us we can cancel up until the last minute for refund. So that’s shouldn’t be college board but your school that is dictating that.

If you go to UT in the end, it’ll be worth it. Can’t be the price of UT for the education you’re getting.

Thanks for the advice. I already took 9 AP CB tests and submitted all AP scores in mystatus honor application.

If you don’t mind sharing what AP classes you have taken and the scores? My D21 took Calculus BC and Biology last year she had to cancel AP Chemistry test because the on line test was so horrible.

Sent you message on courses and CB scores. Thanks
