Interesting that according to Northwestern2019, this year the focus seems to be rank and test scores. A previous year gave an average of 6 leadership positions for those accepted into BHP. Junior son right now is #8 of 800+, SAT 1510 (first time) and will re-take SAT at least once and ACT once. But EC’s and leadership not notable other than qualifying for DECA ICDC this year.
parentof3kids, she is big in DECA. global finalist. President of DECA club, multiple ICDCs. Several other ECs. As for stats: class rank 11/700+, GPA 4.0 UW/5.2 Weighted, ACT 36 (single sitting). Accepted yesterday.
My daughter has a 36 on her ACT, 4.0 (straight A’s). She took the most rigorous schedule of AP and honors classes offered from her non-ranking private school. She has great leadership roles, ECs, some good work experience, and awards form fine arts type competitions. I also think they love to see that you’ve taken Calc BC or at least AB and done well. McCombs is known to be a very quantitative program.
Does anyone know what is the likelihood of receiving a BHP scholarship once you’ve been accepted to BHP? I know that scholarship offers are supposed to be out by March 15, but I have no idea how likely it is for someone to get a scholarship.
Northwestern2019 My daughter is a junior in the program and that is simply not the case. There is no way that it has changed that dramatically. It is deeply holistic and leadership is very important
@BIZP2424 BHP received an incredibly generous donation last year (which is why it now called the Canfield Business Honors program or CBHP) and, as I have heard, the long term plan is to offer scholarships to many, if not all, admitted to the program. I don’t know the time horizon for achieving this, but you should expect that there will be more scholarships this years than every before. An incredible opportunity for CBHP students going forward!
Denied from BHP after being deferred, no interview nothing !
@Wendyh, McCombs’ undergraduate program is ranked #6 in U.S. News; but #11 in Poets and Quants (P&Q) for Undergrads https://poetsandquantsforundergrads.com/. I agree with @kg2013 that P&Q appears to be a more rigorous ranking system. Either way McCombs is first class.
Had interview in mid-January. Just found I was rejected while my general admission to the university is still under review. Very frustrated at the whole application process
just got accepted! wow, would the scholarships mentioned above be available to people in the class of 23? Or are they being rolled out in the following years?
oh wait im so sorry I just wanted to add this so there’s no confusion - i checked it today, but the update was actually posted a few days back with the last wave
also, just a quick question: there was an update to my portal, and an email, but no phone call. that doesn’t mean anything, right? Just a little nervous haha
Only few top schools offer undergraduate business programs. Most insist on need of a more broad undergrad education. Hence high ranking of undergrad programs means little.
Son just found out he did not get business honors. As a result, he will not likely attend UT. It seems they put huge emphasis on test scores. My son is first in his class, max rigor and in fact takes extra AP classes online not offered at his school. 13 APs, 4.0 unweighted 4.91 weighted 33 act EC are excellent - founded multiple organizations including an investment club which competes and is ranked in top 5% of several hundred clubs, holds national position with FBLA, state VP with FBLA and is the president of several organizations on campus including his FBLA chapter, Class president and student gov experience, mentors for multiple organizations, Chairperson of the Superintendent’s Advisory Council for the county school system, and also brought Dance Marathon to his high school. He’s also done a few hundred hours of community service. As far as I’m concerned, it is their loss lol. I am happy for him not to attend UT. My daughter got into business honors and was all excited about it until she visited and got a closer look at the program and the school. To be honest she didn’t have nearly the EC, business focus as shown through coursework and ecs or leadership he does…but she was NMF with higher scores lol. (lower gpa though still 1st in her class). I had some concerns about the campus but my son really wanted to apply as he is passionate about finance… Everything works out the way it is supposed to. Good luck everyone!
@fbhsmom Your S may have wonderful alternatives to UT, but a BHP rejection is not the end of the world. We were in the same boat last year - S had a 33 ACT, toward top in class, great ECs/essays, got a BHP interview, and ultimately rejected. But S has loved freshman year, and already got a great well-paid internship for this summer without being BHP. There are plenty of very successful non-BHP students who go on to great jobs. BHP admissions are kind of unpredictable - S has friends with 35/36 ACTs who were rejected, and friends with 30/31 ACTs who got in. S will try for sophomore BHP admission this spring. But if doesn’t make the cut again, McCombs without BHP is still great.
@johncocktoasten are you from TX? To me, UT oos without any scholarships or BHP seems like a lot of money for the campus environment I saw when visiting. Right now yes my son has some other great options and is still waiting on other applications as well. So it seems unlikely he will choose UT. But thanks for your imput.
@fbhsmom No, we are OOS. But UT is a great school, McCombs is a top undergrad business school, S absolutely loved everything about it, and we had the savings to send him anywhere. Also, we are cautiously optimistic about getting in-state starting next year. Finally, what turned out to be S’s second choice of the places he got in - Vanderbilt - is even more expensive than UT OOS.
@fatherof2boys Thanks! Yes, McCombs is one of the best Business schools for sure. Without BHP is still great!
@johncocktoasten Good to know. My S didn’t get into BHP, but is still very happy/excited to go to UT this Fall as a non-BHP student. He wants to also try to apply for BHP as a Sophomore.
With or without undergrad business school, eventually you’ll need an MBA to succeed.
