UT Dallas Class of 2024- Admissions / Preparation Discussion

@TexasGuy2019 we are OOS (1200 miles away) so we want to make sure AES or NMF covers enough of the COA before accepting.

Any upsides to accept the offer now if I’m instate?

You don’t want to accept admission unless you have made the decision to go there. You do want to apply for housing if there is a strong possibility that you will be attending and want on campus housing and especially if you want in an LLC. Last year many students did not apply for housing until they made their final decision on admittance in late April and found out that there was no housing available in July. Don’t wait that long.

@GTAustin No housing for the incoming freshmen? So where did they live? Is LLC good? I don’t know much about it.

There is not enough on campus housing for all incoming freshman. Students from the area commute and there are many apartment complexes in the area. Many of them are on the school’s bus line. This is not an uncommon situation. If you are interested in living on campus, put that deposit down.

Whether you want to live in a LLC depends on what you want. The LLC’s at UTD are based on major or honors. A LLC based on major means that you will be living with and taking classes with the same group of people. It is good for study groups and getting to know people majoring in the same thing. They also have activities specifically geared towards that major. The downside is you don’t tend to meet or make friends that are majoring in something else. It depends on what you want. If you do prefer a LLC situation, do apply for housing early. The number of beds are limited.

By January - If it is one of your top two schools - and you are still waiting for an admission decision from the other or all your scholarship decisions to come in - APPLY FOR HOUSING. You are allowed to apply for housing before you accept admission. IMHO, it is worth the loss of $100 if you want an LLC or want on campus housing in general.

There was a mini -revolt like situation at our late June freshman orientation during a the parent Q&A session. There were so many upset parents about their kids being on the waitlist for housing. Eventually -they tabled all housing questions and parents were told that they could talk with housing staff at the hour long student life reception following the formal Q&A. Those staff members got swarmed.

UTD’s reputation as a great school is growing rapidly and the housing can’t keep up the pace with record enrollment. Last year, 2018-19, there were 3,751 freshman (3,862 if you include part time). I don’t think they have released the official 2019-2020 numbers yet - but I’ve heard over 4000 mentioned. If true that is ahead of predictions.

And about LLCs - my daughter is living in one. It’s a good experience thus far. They have some of their classes in the dorm. I think it is the small group discussion sections of big auditorium classes. She has joined a social organization outside her major - so she is becoming friends with lots of people outside her major. She is in a smaller major, ATEC, so unless she only hung out on her floor - she is naturally meeting people of other majors.

Daughter checked her portal this morning and saw she was accepted to UTD. She should be a strong candidate for academic scholarships. Will they send her an email or other information about that? She is also a NMSF so hopefully will be able to avail herself of their NMF scholarship. Thank you

@janiemiranda AES scholarships generally show up in the student portal about two weeks after acceptance, NM won’t show up until she picks UTD as her #1 choice and makes NMF. They will give her the highest scholarship, NM in your case, but they don’t combine scholarships.

@3scoutsmom Thank you so much for your reply! I am hoping she will be offered AES scholarships because even though i think she is a strong candidate for NMF it’s certainly not something we can 100% count on until notification in February. Should she expect any email from them or do they do everything through the portal?

@janiemiranda the vast majority of NMSF go on to NMF unless she blew off the application, wrote a very snarky essay, has a history of discipline issues, or has had semester grades lower than B’s, she has nothing to worry about making NMF.

@3scoutsmom Thank you! I think she should make it no problem after reading everything you wrote. It is very reassuring!

@laurarwrites, congratulations on the acceptance to UTD!

My daughter applied to UTD for BioMedical Eng on 7/1 and was accepted on 8/8. With the way things are looking she may very well not get her first choice of TAMU for engineering, and UTD will be our backup. I’ve been on line and tried to apply for housing, but the option is not there for the 20/21 school year. Have they not opened it up yet?

I don’t think housing opens up until next month.

Housing is not open yet. I would keep checking back. She can email to find out when it will open. And she may want to consider applying for the engineering LLC.

How long it will take to get UTDID after the submission? Thanks!

Please share your profile if you already got accepted. How long it took from your first submission ? Thanks!

My son submitted his application the night of 10/18. Don’t know if his online status changed but on Monday the 28th an acceptance packet arrived in the mail (we live in the Austin area) and the letter says that AES awards will come out Dec 15. He is auto accept and was accepted into computer science. My son thought he still needed to submit his test score(s) but I guess not? This is in contrast to my older son who graduated high school in 2016. He applied to UT Dallas but they said he was missing his test scores even though I contacted ACT and they said the score was submitted. I told my son to follow up but he never did and in May he finally got his acceptance package from UT Dallas but by this time he already was committed to UT Austin.

@parentof3kids, if they do not have the test scores, I would definitely send them. To have any chance at all for an AES scholarship, they will need the test scores. I’m kinda surprised he received an acceptance from them w/o them but I guess if you are an auto accept maybe they don’t need them.
